Also, remember that if your 10x gives up the ghost, nRoute will work with any GPS if you use GPS Gate. Unfortunately, the same is not true for Mobile PC.

Both are good tools to add to your collection.

Actually, I have found a replacement for GPSGate that does work with MobilePC. The program is called XPort by CuriousTech. Downloadable here. http://www.curioustech.net/xport.html

I am having another issue with the latest maps (North America 2015.40) When I try to search for a city or address, the program says that the detailed maps do not support routing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What program are you using to search with? Mobile PC? Mapsource? Basecamp? Something else?

Have you checked to be sure the maps are unlocked? Sometimes an update does not unlock properly and this can be one side effect.

This is in MobilePC. The maps are unlocked and will route to POI's and favourites. Trying to route to an address gives the message and routing to a city, does not populate the list of cities even as I type in the city. Javawa GMTK shows the maps are unlocked. This is puzzling as 2015.2 maps worked.

Thanks

You probably need to reinstall the maps. It sounds like the city/address index got whacked when the map was compiled.

You might try to use a reduced version of 2015.4 such as Canada and US only. I noted with 2015.3 that GMPC does not support the size of the full file.

Ken and Terry

Thanks for the suggestions. I had figured that there might be something bad in the map data, so I have removed and reinstalled it a few times, even downloading a new version, to no avail.

Tonight, I tried creating a mapset of Canada and US, which is still about 2GB in size and still doesn't work.

However, in my playing, I did stumble across an awkward solution. If I create GMAPSUPP with a full 2015.4 mapset and GMAPSUP2 with a full 2015.2 mapset, everything works normally. I can route to cities and addresses again. The really weird part is that if I turn off the 2015.2 map through 'Manage My Data' and 'Mapsource', it STILL works.

I will continue to play with this and report any further results. Although this is a workaround solution, I would rather not have to 'waste' one of my limited mapset names on a map that is not used. I think my next step might be to create a very small 2015.2 map and see if it still works.

Thanks again for your help and let me know if you have nay other thoughts.

Thanks again

Dave

As a test, I downloaded 2015.4 Canada plus border states to a computer running GMPC with a 10x. This was a good download as it is small and quick. I was able to search for addresses in BC with no issues.

I will download a larger version on a different computer this evening but don't expect that a full version will work. I'll try Canada plus US.

Thanks Terry. I am running a software only version. I wonder if that makes a difference????

Sorry, I don't have a software version of GMPC that is licensed to download new maps. I didn't even know they existed. This is a 10x thread.

I just completed the download of 2015.4 Canada plus US. It is too big for GMPC and shows a negative value at Tools>Manage My Data>Map Sets>Built-in maps.

Therefore, it won't work. Stick with a smaller map either as a download or prepared from MapSource.

Thanks Terry!!! I never noticed the negative sign before. It looks as though the limit is about 2GB for the city / address database to work. I am able to split the full map into gmapsupp and gmapsup2 and it works.

Thanks again

Actually it is not only the database; generally the product won't work at all. If it runs, it will be because you have another map loaded.

I've noticed it takes up to 30 seconds for GMPC to start when there is a faulty map such as above. If the maps are good, the software will load almost instantaneously on my computers.

This might be a bit picky, but the map is only a database. This is the way that vector based maps (like City Navigator) work. There are three types of map objects: polylines (like roads), polygons (like lakes) and points (like cities). So the map is just a database in Garmin's proprietary format, and each record has fields for the object's name, type, coordinates and other data.

The software (such as MobilePC or the firmware on a dedicated device) read the database (.img file) and "connect the dots" to display a map on the screen.

I downloaded the entire map to MapSource and split it arbitrarily into two regions as you did. I wanted to see how the unlock would work. I renamed the first file as gmapprom.img as I am running 5.00.70 on this computer and can't remember what has replaced gmapsup2.

Regardless, it worked perfectly and a gma file was created in the MobilePC folder which appear to handle the unlocking.

I do note that when I try to create a 3000 mile route (I picked Toronto as a test) it says not enough memory. However, I tried that on a computer (with less memory and running 5.00.60) that doesn't have a split map and get the same message. So, that must be a different problem I had not tested before!

Terry, I'm very glad you mentioned it. It saved me troubleshooting time. Of course I first wanted to try to install the entire map, but when it didn't work properly, I knew what the issue was and I simply installed a smaller map and all was OK.
