GPS software for tracking my travels on a cruise
fscguy
I am going on a cruise and want to be able to create a track of where we cruise. I am going to get a USB GPS receiver. I want to know what software I need to use to grab data from the receiver and turn it into a track I can use in Google etc.

A GPS receiver inside a steel cruise ship? I don't think so. Unless you have booked an ultra-premium top-deck penthouse.

Oddly enough, Microsoft's Streets and Trips will produce a GPS trail with a USB GPS receiver even at sea (provided, of course, you can pick up a signal and your laptop is always on, both problematic). That GPS trail will be in a file on one's computer and will show as a wiggly blue line. That file can then be converted to a GPX file which can be opened in freeware programs such as Tyre and ITN converter which both work with Google Maps although the latter offers an wide variety of underlying maps on which you can show your GPS trail.

You do not need the latest version of S&T; any of the last few versions (certainly 2009 on) will produce a GPS trail. Therefore, you should be able to find it somewhere on the net cheap.

Finally, S&T takes a location fix every second it can. Therefore, the longer the trail, the bigger the file. Big files can lock up the computer and otherwise become unmanageable. A multi-day file would be huge.

If the cruise ship gives you wifi, then it might be easier just to use one of the various ship tracking websites. Google will find them. I know I was using them on the Galveston/Point Bolivar ferry last month (via 3G) just to look up the freighters we saw heading up/down the Houston Ship Channel!

Go to the Windows app store and search for "gps track logger" or just "gps logger". Or do the same search in your favourite search engine.

No. GPS Babel is a conversion program. It lets you convert GPS data files between various formats, e.g. Garmin GPX, Google Earth KML, CSV, TomTom OV2 and many more.

Your simplest option is probably to find a cheap copy of Microsoft Streets & Trips. It allows you to capture a track log and with the built in maps you can see your position in real time.

I have used both Streets & Trips and Garmin nRoute on previous cruises to monitor our position and create track logs. nRoute is free but it's not trivial to set up and requires a fairly steep learning curve.

is there a street and trips that runs on windows 8?

I think any recent version should run fine on Win8.
