Help with reinstalling Garmin Mobile PC GPS 20x
opfor2
I finally replaced my old Toughbook CF-29 with a new CF-30 laptop. I have the full Garmin Mobile PC with the USB 20x receiver. I attempted to install the software on my new CF-30 running Windows 7, SP-1 and the install seemed like it went well. I attached the USB receiver and I get an error message stating that the receiver can not unlock the maps. I attempted to uninstall MPC and reinstall it however I just get the same error. Any ideas, maybe I didn't uninstall everything correctly??

Also, since MPC has been discontinued, what other good software programs are available for the CF-30 ??

It should have worked fine the first time if the maps were the ones you licensed previously.

To do a reinstall, you must remove some files that the uninstaller does not delete. Check under C:\Windows\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\GarminMobilePC. It is probably a good idea to delete that GarminMobilePC folder entirely after an uninstall before reinstalling.

Also the map data is at C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps. If there is anything there, it might be an idea to delete that Maps folder as well.

Then try a reinstall.

EDIT: I have done this more than once with a GMPC hardware version including a BT 10x. However, I have never used the original map that came with the product as I have a map update license. Maybe it won't work with the original map (2009 in my case) but I can't see why not.

A couple other programs are CoPilot Live v8 and Delorme Street Atlas. Unfortunately ALK seems to have forgotton about the non-truck version of CoPilot for laptops and Street Atlas requires a different mind set than GMPC.

I cant seem to find the files listed above. I'm trying to install this on a PC running windows 7, SP-1

Sorry, Users is a root folder, not in the Windows folder. That should be C:\Users\<Name>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin etc.

I missed another important folder that may not be removed properly. In the same Garmin folder listed above, it is called 'Devices' and contains a GarminMobilePC folder as well. Be sure to remove that folder before a reinstall.

Yea I'm not finding any of the folders that you listed above. I did manually delete the "GarminMobile PC" file.. I don't know what else to do or look for.

I tested it on another computer. After an uninstall those folders were still present and I deleted them. I installed my copy of GMPC with its dedicated BT 10x and got the same message you did.

It seems that you cannot install this program, even the hardware version on another computer with the original maps.

So in other words I have a worthless program!!! I guess Delorme here I come!!! http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10121

I wonder if it's a Windows 7 thing.. I recall reinstalling the GMPC program on my CF-29 laptop running XP a few times without any issues.

Probably not. Your reinstall on the same computer would leave the xml file in the GarminMobilePC folder in the Devices folder. If that file is not overwritten, it has the unlocking information for that device and map for that computer.

Good luck with Street Atlas. A very powerful program with a steep learning curve. It probably won't work with your 20x (nothing does) so get a good GPS with it. I understand the GlobalSat BU353 S4 is available with Street Atlas for a very good price! That is a very good GPS, far superior to the 20x.

Ya my new CF-30 has a built in GPS receiver so the Delorme should work. So I'm wondering if I were to copy the XML file from the old CF-29 to the new CF-30 if it would work?

Here is the appropriate link.

I was going to try testing that but don't have a computer with the original map on it to copy the xml file from. Let us know how it works.

The file is called GarminDevice.xml and can be searched for in Win7 without too much trouble.

Further testing shows that file (and the Devices folder) not to be present on a computer that has only had the hardware version of GMPC installed. I must have been looking at a computer with a GMPC software version installed. Back to the drawing board!!

Ok, I got it working. I copied the map file gmapprom.img from the old computer to the new one. This file is located in the GarminMobilePC folder located at C:\Program Files\Garmin if you did a standard install.

In my case I had to copy the gmapprom.unl file as well but that is because this is a newer map. You probably won't have that file but check anyway.

I can tell it has been a while since I worked with this program as I had forgotten most of the procedures. Such as where the maps were stored!
