In my case I had to copy the gmapprom.unl file as well but that is because this is a newer map. You probably won't have that file but check anyway.

I can tell it has been a while since I worked with this program as I had forgotten most of the procedures. Such as where the maps were stored!

So is this then an "unlocked" map from the old computer??
tcassidy
I assume locked to that gps.

OK I will copy it from the old CF-29 and install it on the new CF-30 and we will see what happens. I'll keep you posted and if this doesn't work then I'm done with this!!!!

So much easier when the computers are network connected. I copied the file over in minutes. I'll test further when I get home again.

So I'm going to try one more thing before I throw in the towel, I'm going to copy ALL of the Garmin files from the old computer and copy them to the new one.

Well IM DONE!!!!! Nothing seems to work!! So I will just uninstall everything and call it a day. I will order the Delorme program and utilize the built in GPS receiver.

Terry, Thank you for all of your help and have an excellent rest of the weekend.

Dan..

That is good. I can't seem to have the updater find GMPC on any of my computers even though it worked a couple of weeks ago. So I'm pretty well out of ideas anyway.

Are you sure you have allowed the hidden (by Windows) files to be visible? As administrator, you may have to make some set up changes to see all the folder contents. MSFT likes to protect us from ourselves...

And how do I make the folders visible in Windows 7?

Go to the control panel and make these changes. However not sure if it is necessary with old software like GMPC. It is needed with newer garmin Nuvi devices. I have the software version of GMPC, so I can't help with anything else.

I would LOVE nothing more than to be able to get this program to work with my new computer. I was frustrated as hell yesterday trying to get this thing to work. I must of installed, uninstalled, deleted, and copied files a hundred times. I have a lot of waypoints saved on my old computer and I would hate to have to start over with a new program like Delorme..

Sadly, Garmin has just moved past GMPC and doesn't care about it anymore. From what I understand, they no longer have an activation server which means that I can never move my software-only version to a new computer.

There is at least one website where people have discussed ways to hack the software (and the maps) to work on any computer. But I don't think such discussions would be acceptable here.

I think you could probably legally install OpenStreetMap as an alternative, as long as the software itself runs.

Since you like the Garmin system, have you ever considered a dedicated device? There are 7" Nuvi models and also the 7" Dezl. One of the 7" Nuvis was going for about $200 last time I checked and it included lifetime map updates. It should be easy to migrate all your user data to these devices.

I still have HOPE that someone will come up with a solution in getting this program / GPS receiver to work on my new computer..

RIP "GMPC" for I have purchased the Delorme Street Atlas USA 2015 program for $ 39.95 to use in my new GPS equipped Panasonic Toughbook CF-30. GMPC, it was fun knowing and working with you and may you rest in peace in software heaven..
