Help with reinstalling Garmin Mobile PC GPS 20x
tcassidy
Fortunately GMPC hardware version still works for those of us with map updates even though Garmin makes it trickier every year.

Make sure you let us know how adapting to SA goes. It does have its own section on this forum.

Ya will do. I have mixed feeling about having to learn a new program and all the waypoints... wow all the saved waypoints that I had under GMPC... Damn it!!!!
tcassidy
You can save them all with the currnt.gpx file at c:\users\<NAME>\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\GarminMobilePC\gpx on your old computer. As to how to convert them for use in SA, I'm sure someone else here can point the way to a program for that.

Sorry, that should have been current.gpx.

I can't leve well enough alone, so I was playing with the GMPC program again using another Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 running Windows XP and never had the program installed. The install went flawlessly until it came tine to plug in the Garmin GPS receiver and then BAM... I get the same "Cant unlock maps with receiver bla bla bla". However then I noticed a small icon "Hovering" over my outlook program and when I touched it with my courser a little window pooped up stating than another program was attempting to use the program. So I'm wondering if GMPC is attempting to contact the discontinued activation server for an unlock code for the maps and receiver?? Well I'm done with the GMPS I uninstalled it from the other PC, and tossed it in the trash.

GMPC connects with Outlook using dlls for address use and mapping. It has nothing to do with contacting Garmin.

It is too bad you didn't consider Open Maps as suggested by Ken earlier in this thread. It could put together a map for your area that would work fine with GMPC. It would then only require you delete the gmapprom.img file from your GarminMobilePC folder and you would have a newer usable map and no error message.

Would this work with the internal GPS receiver installed in my new CF-30 laptop?? The issue I'm having is I cant get the maps to unlock with the Garmin GPS receiver.
tcassidy
No, it would not work with your internal GPS. The program is locked to your 20x. Also, the old maps were locked to that same GPS but have expired. The Open Maps preparation would work but you would still need the 20x because of the program.

As Boyd said, there are ways around that but not the type that would be discussed on this site.

I'm frustrated as hell with this Garmin.. I love the program for it's easy to use and the maps are easy to read while driving. I just wish that I could find a way to unlock the maps so that I could use them on my new computer. I paid good money for the program and receiver and one would expect it to work with a new updated computer.
tcassidy
You paid good money for it around 4 years ago and don't have map updates! I don't think Garmin is too concerned.

Ya your probably right.. Oh well that's why it's in the trash

Actually I think it was me that suggested that.

If you want to try, this is where you download routable OpenStreetMaps. Sorry, I have never used them myself.

Sorry for the misrepresentation Boyd, you are right. I have tried a BC map with GMPC. It built a gmapsupp.img file and looked good. I only checked a couple areas of interest but they were good.
