GPS dongle XC-GD75, Window 7
musselbeach
Hi, I am new at this GPS systems, I bought a GPS dongle XC-GD75 and got it working on my lap top with GPSViewer which show's Lat, Log,& altitude and locks on to 6 satellites. I downloaded and run PL-2303 USB to serial.
I have down loaded a GPStester but it will not recognize my receiver, And I down loaded the navigation program BSGPS and Viking and they both do not seem to recognize it either. The dongle uses COM port 12 and 4800 bod rate I think windows wont let other software use that port as well??I need help.

Only one program at a time may use the serial signal from a GPS. If you want to use the GPS with more than one program concurrently, take a look at GPSGate.

Thank you, I just installed that yesterday and have not yet tried using it. your statement '
"Only one program at a time may use the serial signal from a GPS." Naturally I have the Dongle plugged into the serial port and it at this time will not work with navigation program i have downloaded. The program just does not recognize the GPS dongle when it scans for it??
tcassidy
Maybe it does not scan at the correct baud rate. If you can, try pre-setting the baud rate and COM port in the program as you already know that information.

Well the dongle operates on com 12 at 4800 baud rate and that is what I set the navigation program too and still doe not see it for some reason??.
tcassidy
You are sure none of the other programs are running? If any of them are using the COM port, the latest program will not see it.

I have the dongle plugged in to a USB port working through it's GPSviewer.exc which shows it is logged on to 6 satellites and it is giving me accurate longitude, latitude & altitude. Then I start one of the programs GPS TESTER, or BPGSP or Viking, only one at a time is loaded and either of them recognizes there is any GPS receiver working now I have not tried it since I have down loaded GPSGATE client for windows yet as I have to locate my laptop and dongle out side to lock on to the satellites and then I can bring it inside by a window. I keep monitoring the viewer to make sure it keeps locked.

GPS Viewer is hogging the COM port. No other program can use it. If you want to run GPS Viewer and another program, you must first install GPS Gate, set it up to find the GPS and use the COM ports it provides to run GPS Viewer and another program..

Oh, That is where I have been doing it wrong then, So if I use the GPS viewer to make sure I am locked on to the satellites and shut down the viewer and load one of the navigator programs it should see the receiver, have I got that right ?
tcassidy
Right on!! And make sure the program actually closes. Then another program will be able to use the COM port.

Well thank you for your help, I will try it this afternoon as I have another project going right now.
