How to copy old Garmin Mobile PC waypoints to a new computer
opfor2
Well, I had to brake down and I bought a new (old) version of GPC with a GPS receiver on Ebay and installed it onto my new Panasonic CF-30 laptop. It seems to run ok without having to contact Garmin for any type of activation code. My question is I would like to copy my old waypoints from my old computer running Windows XP into my new Windows 7 laptop. Where do I begin ??

Thanks
tcassidy
On the old computer, the file you are looking for is 'current.gpx'. I have forgotton where it is stored on an xp computer and am too lazy to start my old laptop to find out. Search for it.

On the Win 7, the file will be at C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\GarminMobilePC\gpx. Copy the old file and replace the on at that location in Win 7 with the one you copied. It will have all the information you had before including routes, tracks and POI.

Couldn't you also just use Mapsource to open your waypoints and save them to file? IIRC, Mapsource treats MobilePC like any other Garmin GPS.

[edit]

Just tried… open Mapsource > Receive From Device > MobilePC > Waypoints. Worked fine. You could then save it as either a .gpx or .gdb file, transfer it to the new computer and send it to MobilePC. I would probably just copy the file myself, but Garmin has actually provided this way to transfer the data without "getting under the hood".

I cant seem to find the file C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\GarminMobilePC\gpx in windows 7, is this a hidden file?? If so how do I unhide it so that I can see it?

You do know the (your name) has to be substituted with whatever the main computer user is called. Look under the Users folder and you should see it.

Did you try my method? If you have maps on your old computer that you want to move, use GMTK: http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

The appData file is hidden and I had to change the setting under the control panel. I was able to copy the file from the old laptop (XP) to the new one (Win 7) and all works as advertised!! Thank you all for your help.

Ya me too.. sucks that I had to buy a old new copy of the program and that I just couldn't reinstall the software on my new laptop. Oh well

Yes, GMTK is an indispensable tool for MapSource and really helps moving maps among computers. And also preparing computers for installing MapSource...just move a map first and GMTK sets up the necessary registry structure.
