Does any USB GPS work with Windows 10 offline maps?
X-it
I have a laptop with Windows 10 on it. I do a lot of snowmobiling and getting access through the trees can be easy if you know the open areas. Windows 10 offline maps has the clarity. But no use investing in a gps receiver if it will not interface with windows 10 offline maps. Anyone know one that will, I came across on ebay from Germany that say it does.

See Ken's recent post on this subject to give you an idea of the difference between external GPS devices and internal location sensors. There is also information about how you might use any external GPS to provide the location information Win 10 maps require.

I read that twice, lots of interesting info there. Most of what I do not understand. I am waiting for some one to say heck ya that works with windows 10 offline maps or forget it it does not. I do not mined installing and tweaking drivers to make it work.

You could consider GPSDirect from TurboIRC.com as a driver. It takes the NMEA data from a Com port that an external GPS provides and converts it to location sensor-type data. That data is what Win 10 mapping programs use.

Of course, if you are looking for a GPS device anyway, why bother with Win 10 mapping at all. I wonder if you would find it suitable for your use in real time. Why not consider a real navigation program to go with your GPS and ignore the built in stuff.

Are you actually using a Windows 10 computer on your snowmobile?

Ha ha yes I would pack a laptop in with me if I could get offline maps to work, for some reason windows 10 has winter scenes and man is it clear, however if I could not get a gps receiver to work with it, it is garbage. I have have held gps the screen is small and a subscription to satellite view. I Also have a tablet with Memory maps on it, is that clear and works fantastic coupled with google maps offline it is 10x better than any dedicated gps I have come across. It is a Samsung tablet A 350....I love it. Thanks for the replys everyone

What mapping apps has everyone tried for satellite views? Google offline maps seem to be clear at times and other times blurry.

You will find this is true of all the so-called "satellite" views from Bing and others, not just Google. They all get their photos from similar sources. And they are mostly aerial photos (shot from aeroplanes), not satellite photos.

You will find that most of the photos that are "blurry" when you zoom in have older dates than the better ones. Older aerial photography was often done at higher altitudes and/or with lower resolution cameras. Most of the newer aerial photos are done with much higher resolution equipment.

So i bought a Globalsat usb 353. Windows 10 offline maps, did not work. Google Earth did not work. E-topo maps using Memory Maps did work.

What do you mean by "didn't work"?

How did you set up the BU353?

No gps location on either google earth or windows 10 offline maps, i just installed the disk that came with bu353 then tried turboirc which killed location on memory maps. So i uninstalled everything and reinstalled it and memory maps worked again.

I just tried GPSDirect from TurboIRC on Win 10 with a GlobalSat S4. It appears to work with Windows Maps once you set up the right Com port. I assume it would work with any other mapping program reliant on the Windows Location Sensor.

How many com ports you have with turboirc direct? My gps shows 3 , maybe there was more before i unistalled. Well at least memory maps works which is great.

I just looked in Device Manager to see which Com port the GPS was using. It showed on Com 3 so I typed that in to GPSDirect for the Sensor Driver (CTRL+D).

I could get a position in windows 10 maps but it had nothing to do with gps sensor, just off the WiFi signal. As soon as i went to airplane mode it was gone.
