View in Google Earth Problem
Ken in Regina
People who like to use the "View in Google Earth" menu item from within Garmin's Mapsource or Basecamp programs have been vexed the past year or so because it seems to have stopped working.

The workaround has been to make sure to run Google Earth (or Pro) before selecting the "View in Google Earth" menu item and then it will work. This is a bit of a nuisance but it does work.

Someone just posted a more permanent solution on the Garmin forums; a solution that they got from POI-Factory. Here it is, with a couple of my additional comments afterwards:

100% Tested

run cmd with administrative privileges!

If Google Earth is Not recognized in Mapsource or Basecamp the problem is Google

Earth/Google Earth Pro has not registered properly.
Solution:

First you need to check properties to show WHERE Google Earth is installed:

From the Command Prompt type the the following as applicable and press ENTER:

(Make sure you are in the C:\ root directory)

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Earth Pro\client\googleearth.exe" /RegServer (works with Google Earth Pro in Win 7...10)

"C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth Pro\client\googleearth.exe" /RegServer (Google Earth Pro in XP)

"C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\client\googleearth.exe" /RegServer (Google Earth in XP)

Should fix Google Earth recognition problem
1. As highlighted in the quote, DO use the Administrator mode of the Command Line.

2. You do not need to be in the C: root directory. Each of the examples given has the fully qualified path so Windows will find and execute it correctly. As long as you don't make a typo. If you make a typo, nothing will help you.

3. There is one example missing for the non-Pro version in Windows 7, 8.x, and 10.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Earth\client\googleearth.exe" /RegServer

4. For those not familiar with using the Command Prompt, it is critical to use the double quotes. They must be exactly as in the examples. If not, you will get an error that there is an invalid directory. This will not cause any harm. It just won't work.

This solution works great to automatically launch Google Earth (or Pro) when you select to "View in Google Earth" from the View menu in Mapsource or Basecamp.
