"Collections" in Windows 10 Maps
GoneNomad
Ken - does the version of Win10 Maps on your Surface Pro 3 have the new “Collections” Feature (like Here has always had)?

ref.:
"...the latest update for Windows 10 Maps app, which has been released to Fast Ring brings Collections feature.
The latest update takes the app version to 5.1610.2954.0."

Windows 10 Mobile Maps update brings the “Collections” Feature @ October 28, 2016

AFAIK, the Win10 app store doesn't list the current version of the Maps app.

The latest release version is Maps 5.1609.2651.0. You can find it at the bottom of the Settings page (About This App).

"...released to Fast Ring" means the early beta testers in the Windows Insiders test program just got the version you are referring to.

I've got the latest Fast Ring version of Win10 installed in a virtual machine on my office system so I can take a look at it. Is there something specific you want to know?

If the version of Win10 Maps on your Surface Pro 3 had the new “Collections” feature, I was wondering if it allowed places in a collection to be sorted or re-ordered. Here does not. My guess is MS Maps doesn't either... yet.

The “Collections” feature is another way to have organize the stops on a route.

GoogleMaps is limited in this respect.

I'll try to take a look at it in my VM tomorrow morning. Going dancing tonight. Much more fun than fighting with this stuff.

Have fun!
And thanks again!

I just checked and the version in the latest Fast Ring release of Win10 is Maps 5.1610.3022.0. So it might even be a bit newer than the one you referred to.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by "Collections" ... the current release version has "Favorites" and the new Fast Ring version has "Saved Places".

In Favorites, if I hit Edit I can add a Nickname and Notes (multiple lines). There are slider buttons that let me set the favorite as Home or Work. That's pretty much it.

Favorites appear to automatically sort by the Nickname. I added a nickname to one that was sorted at the bottom by its POI name. The POI name started with a "T". The nickname started with a "B" and when I saved it it sorted to the top of the list.

Favorites has a "Car" favorite preinstalled and it can't be deleted. So far I've been able to add a dozen POIs to it. As mentioned, you can force the sort order by using the Nickname field but you probably already know that. In fact I think I recall you mentioning it way back in history.

Okay, in the new one when you click on "Saved Places" you get tabs for either "Favorites" or "Collections".

Favorites looks like it provides similar functionality to the original above. One difference is that it has preset buttons above the list for Home, Work, and Car. So you can set them at the top of the list independently from the entries in the list.

Adding a Favorite works differently now, too. Hitting "Add a Place" pops up the search box. So you don't have to keep popping back and forth between the search box and the Favorites icon at the top of the window like in the old one.

When you hit Edit on a Favorite it now just has the Nickname and Notes fields. Makes sense because you can now set Home and Work independently. The list sorts on the Nickname, eg. if there's no nickname it will sort on the name of the POI but if there's a nickname that's what it will sort on. It's automatic, like the old version.

If you search and it thinks it's got a unique hit, it automatically adds it. NOT a good thing. For instance, I searched for "Weyburn motorcycles", thinking I would get a list of the dealers in Weyburn to select from. Instead, it automatically entered the location for the City of Weyburn into the list. I had to search for "motorcycle dealers weyburn". Then I got the expected list of dealers to choose from. You'll have to be really careful with this one!!

Okay, I'm done for now. Supper time. I'll take a look at Collections another time. Just to give you a teaser, it says you can create collections for any kind of place you want to remember. When I click on "Add a Collection" it gives me two fields, "Name (for example, "Restaurants to try"), and "Description (optional)".

I'll see what that does later tonight or perhaps tomorrow.

OK, that's like Google Maps (Nickname = Label).
Wonder if multiple items can have the same "Nickname" like GoogleMaps "Labels"?

Actually, I don't have any idea how the Win10 Maps app works, because I don't have a PC running Win10. But I assumed that after Here's pulled their Windows app, MS has been making their own "Maps" app more like Here, and adding a few of their own changes along the way, intended to be incremental improvements. That has been the Microsoft way, since the 1980s.

Yep, definitely not the way it should work. Another case of MS UI automatically doing something you don't really want it to do.

Thanks!

In Here, Collections are a way to group favorites (saved places) together.

My interest in collections is for the same reason as my interest in the "LABELED" places in Google Maps: it's a way to group the waypoints/stops on a route.

But the way google does it, the user has to do a text search to narrow down the list (which is the standard google methodology), but that's not optimal in a mobile environment, where it's a lot easier to pick an icon (relatively large) compared to having to type in text on a mobile device's tiny on-screen keyboard.

As often happens, this thread has veered away from what the title indicates.
It's my fault; starting with post #17

Maybe it's time to split off that one & subsequent posts to a new thread?

Ken - BTW, this post & this post show more info about how Here collections work.
I hope MS keeps the concept and fixes the current limitations (which it appears they have, at least in terms of sort order)

In reviewing this I realized that I never did answer your original question. Now that this version of Maps is the released version in Windows 10 I guess it's time I got around to it!!

The answer is No, it does not.

You still have the option of editing the Nickname for an individual Favourite and forcing it that way but not any higher level of sorting.

Thanks.

I have a Win10 Surface 3 LTE now, but haven't yet done much testing of the Win10 Maps app.

Surface 3? Or Surface Pro 3?

I don't think the Surface Pro is available with LTE yet. The LTE equipped Surface 3 ( a true Win 10 machine) has recently become available in the US of A.
