Streets & Trips locks up when asking for navigation
a1953mdl
I'm running S&T 2009 on a Dell tablet with Win10.
Everything has been working fine. I have used 2009 on several trips.
I use a BU-353S4 for my receiver. I have GPS info installed and it locates satellites.
I was recently trying to get Bing or W10Maps to work with the receiver and downloaded the trial version of Turboirc. I could not get turboirc to work. Then my WiFi stopped working, apparently due to some conflict in my turboirc install. Not sure.
Anyway, couldn't restore since I hadn't set a restore point so I reset to factory and reinstalled
S&T 2009
GPSinfo

Now when I try to use S&T, it will let me make a trip, open the gps pane and start gps. It will then zoom to my location and give me a red bullseye where I am (also my starting point for my trip). (Again, GPSinfo recognizes the gps sensor)
It gives me a "proceed to route" message after i agree to the provide navigation terms. But it doesn't track me as I leave, it just locks up (stops responding) if I hit any button. Only S&T stops responding, I can close the program and tablet works fine.

Does this ring any bells or can anyone suggest something to try?
Did I fail to install one of the apps for S&T communicating with the gps sensor? It's been a while since I originally installed S&T and seems like there may be another app I need to install.
TIA

Why are you using GPS Info? If it is monitoring the BU-353 COM port then there will be no NMEA data for S&T. The COM port generated for the BU-353 can only support one program. If you wish to monitor the GPS data and run a program such as S&T, install GPS Gate, have it find the BU-353 Com port and use one of its output Com ports for GPS Info and a different one for S&T.

Otherwise, just turn off GPS Info and let S&T use the BU 353 Com port.

I only used gpsinfo to verify the receiver was working. I closed the program before opening s&t.
Anyway, in trying to get this working..... I discover that s&t doesn't actually lock up, it stops responding for a while (like a minute or so). It will then work for a short while (maybe 15-20 seconds) and then go back to not responding.
Only seems to do this with s&t, but really don't use the tablet for much other than internet and s&t.
Seems like it is having a hard time communicating or calculating or something.
Thoughts?
Previous to the system reset, it worked very quickly.

I assume you used GPS Info with the GPS in the same location and monitored it for a while to prove the issue was not related to the BU-353 or COM port. How about monitoring the GPS signal indicator in S&T. I can't remember if 2009 had one but 2013 shows it in the top right corner of the GPS pane.

The simple thing to do is not run GPS Info at all, to make sure it's not forcing S&T to compete with it for GPS interrupts. Just run S&T and see if it runs normally when it's running by itself.

Will try this today (I hope). Thanks for the help

S&T is back to working fine. I believe the problem was a usb hub I was trying to use. My Dell Venue 11 Pro only has one usb port. I prefer to use a mouse also and so I was trying to use the hub to allow both the gps receiver and the dongle for the mouse to be used at the same time.
The tablet running S&T would recognize the mouse, but not the gps receiver. Without the hub (and mouse), S&T works fine. Even with out the mouse, but with the gps reeiver, S&T would not function properly.

The hub is not powered, would a powered hub let me use both?
Thoughts, suggestions.

Thank you for your help.
Lee would allow me to use the mouse, but not the gps receiver

Time for a Bluetooth GPS always assuming your laptop has BT. Also, you could try a BT mouse and stick with your existing GPS device. That might be cheaper. And easier to find.

Do you have a smartphone. I believe there are apps on both iOS and Android that will allow your phone to behave like a bluetooth GPS. If nothing else, it would allow you to test the computer with a bluetooth connection to a gps. If it works, then you could decide whether you want to buy a dedicated bluetooth GPS receiver.

I have a Garmin GLO and it is very accurate. Also sends 10 position updates per second, cost is ~$100. There should be some less expensive bluetooth gps receivers, but they do tend to be more expensive than USB devices.

Quite possibly that would fix it, certainly worth a try. You could get one from a "big box" store like Best Buy, Staples, etc. and see if it works. Should be able to return if it doesn't.

But how are you going to power a hub? There may be some battery powered ones for travel, don't know. Otherwise you would need some kind of adapter or inverter to power the hub.

That was my thought, how to power it.

The Dell Venue 11 Pro is an Atom powered device so it can probably be powered from a cigarette lighter adapter. Getting an adapter with more than one output would provide a 5v supply for a multiport USB hub.

However, this presupposes a powered hub would solve the problem. It very well might not and certainly should be tested as Boyd suggests. I think an easier solution is a BT mouse. If a BT GPS is to be considered, don't go with the Garmin GLO as it is not supported by S&T which can only work with 4800bps.

Good point Terry, I had forgotten that. But now I remember S&T freezing when I tried using it with the GLO.

It'll be a few days before I can work on this. I am planning on trying a BT mouse, seems easiest.
Thanks

How did you get a 2009 copy of S&T to work on a tablet? I need to get a virgin 2013 copy to work on a new laptop or tablet.
