Moving Waypoints from old computer to new
opfor2
Hi all,

I understand that the Garmin Mobile PC program has long been discontinued, nevertheless I would like to reinstall the program from a Toughbook CF-30 to a CF-31 and I would like to transfer all of my saved waypoints to the new computer. Could someone walk me through the procedure ?

thanks

After installing GMPC on your new computer copy the file 'current.gpx' from the old computer to the same location on the new computer. It is normally located at c:>Users>(your name)>AppData>Roaming>Garmin>GarminMobilePC>gpx. You will be asked if you want to overwrite the existing file. Answer yes.

Can you actually install MobilePC to a different computer now that Garmin's authentication server no longer exists? Were you going to install directly from the original disks or copy it from your old computer?

I still have MobilePC on my HP Slate but have not used it for years. Terry - does MobilePC treat the current.gpx file differently than Garmin's dedicated devices? On an automotive device (Nuvi, DriveSmart, etc) the Current.gpx file is only used for output. If you want the device to read data from a file, you need to give it a different name.

For example, if you use Mapsource to send data to a device then a file named Temp.gpx is sent. So the procedure is normally to copy Current.gpx from the old device, change the name to Temp.gpx, then copy it to the GPX folder on the new device. It will then be imported at startup and any new waypoints are added to Current.gpx.

While I admit I haven't done it for some time - maybe earlier this year with the YogaBook, I am fairly sure it is as easy as I listed. No name changes required. Just make sure you copy the file rather than cut it as if you lose it, you will no longer have that information.

Maybe I will try it later to see if it works right.

IIRC, there were some inconsistencies as to whether Current.gpx actually gets read depending on devices. But typically any file with a .gpx extension is read and if there are new waypoints they are added.

But I'm also still curious about moving MobilePC between different computers. I bought the software-only version and am pretty sure I can't move that to a different PC now.

That is true. I have a hardware version as well but the software version is easily unlocked or was the last time I tried.

Sorry.... I don't understand. It is true that I can't move my software version to a different computer, but it is easily unlocked? How? Can I install it from my original disks?
