Garmin Mobile PC versus Garmin nRoute, an updated view.
Ken in Regina
It's time for an update to this thread but it has become long enough that I think it's time to start a new one.

My good feelings about the general usability of Garmin Mobile PC and the beauty of the map viewing haven't changed, but a couple of things have happened that influence my feelings about Mobile PC and might influence purchase decisions by others.

The first is trip planning. Any of us who have the opportunity to use both nroute and Mobile PC seem to be in agreement that planning for non-trivial trips is much easier with Mapsource (and therefore nroute because it uses the same interface) than with Mobile PC. This applies to both the Software-only version and also the version that comes with the Garmin GPS receiver.

The second might be an even bigger issue, but it only applies to the Software-only version of Mobile PC.

You can't add locked maps to the software-only version.

More specifically, and technically, you can't get unlock codes for the software-only version of Mobile PC. So if you need another region of the world than North America you will have to find Mapsource-compatible maps that do not require unlocking because you will not be able to use any of Garmin's locked map products.

You can add maps that are not locked, like topos and some of Garmin's Metroguide products.

For anyone in Europe or Australia, that means you can use the relevant Metroguide product but not City Navigator. I'm not sure how good a solution that is. Garmin has officially stopped supporting Metroguide Canada. That is, even though Garmin still sells it, they are no longer going to update that product. And it's getting pretty old. I don't know if this applies to the other Metroguide products or not.

Anywhere else in the world is out of luck as far as using a Garmin map product with Mobile PC Software-only version.

The simplest solution for anyone who wants to use Mobile PC is to avoid the Software-only version. The map unlocking issues go away when you have a genuine Garmin GPS receiver connected to Mobile PC with a serial number that you can get map unlock codes for.

Are you sure of that ? The only message I get when I try to get a new map at myAccount (mon compte) is this message:

Free translation:

Available cartographic updatings for this peripheral:
" No available cartographic updating "

Here the end of the message:

There is not available MapSource for this region there is no longer any available zones has the purchase on the MapSource for unity GPS of which have you entered the number of series (already unlocked you all the zones of MapSource for the device with this series number).
You can equally buy a supplementary zone for a different device:
Or select another option that to buy an additional zone:

Hi Alain,

The update response is easy to confuse. It does not mean you cannot buy additional maps for other regions. It means that there are no newer versions of the map you already have.

For example, City Navigator North America NT2009 is available. My iQue 3600 does not use NT maps, only the older ones. A non-NT version of City Navigator North America 2009 has not been released. So when I check for updates for my Garmin iQue I get the same message as you got.

The message is literally true.

But I can still buy other maps for other regions for my iQue. For instance, I can buy City Navigator Europe or Australia for my iQue if I wish and I can get unlock codes for them and they will unlock in Mapsource and load on the iQue just fine.

If I understand the registration process correctly for Mobile PC with Garmin GPS receiver, you can buy any maps you wish to use on Mobile PC and get an unlock code for the GPS20x. They will unlock in Mapsource and load to Mobile PC.

Salut Alain,

Hi Ken,

C’est ce que je pensais également. J’ai essayé d’importer City Navigator Europe, mais on me demande le no. de série de mon appareil Garmin et l’on me dit que ce n’est pas disponible…
Peut-être que je comprend mal la procédure ??

It is what I also thought. I tried to import City Navigator Europe, but they asks me the serial number of my GPS 20x Garmin and they says to me that it is not available…
Perhaps what I understands the procedure badly ??

Merci.

I try again , here is the anwser:

There is no longer any available zones has the purchase on the MapSource for unity GPS of which have you entered the number of series (already unlocked you all the zones of MapSource for the device with this series number).

May be I will have to buy the DVD ? Garmin Mobile PC is on the list on the site of the DVD of City Navigator Europe:

City Navigator Europe is included with the purchase of several Garmin® units and is also available for purchase as a stand-alone product. See the product compatibility table (right) for a list of products that Garmin recommends with this software.

If you already have City Navigator Europe installed in Mapsource and you have used the first unlock code you must buy another unlock code.

In the past Garmin would provide a second unlock code for a second Garmin GPS device at no charge. The policy has changed. They only provide one unlock code. You must purchase additional unlock codes.

I presume that if I buy the DVD Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe NT DVD for 139$ , I will obtain equally a unlock code allowing me to use it with the GPS 20x.

Tanks

Hi Ken,

In keeping track with this thread, can you provide more understanding here which I quote from your earlier post:-

Quote:
K: Anywhere else in the world is out of luck as far as using a Garmin map product with Mobile PC Software-only version.

C: Which I now have and only with Nr American maps

K: The simplest solution for anyone who wants to use Mobile PC is to avoid the Software-only version. The map unlocking issues go away when you have a genuine Garmin GPS receiver connected to Mobile PC with a serial number that you can get map unlock codes for.

C: Which means, I don't download (for those who have yet to do after purchase) or un-install altogether, and start sourcing for maps with unlock codes. Is that what you are suggesting and are such maps available and of course, I also meant legal maps for acquiring? How do I then integrate Mapsource in this way
Just so if those maps are available on line for download, Free or otherwise, can you recommend which I should go specifically for esp. on Western Europe, Australia & NZ, S.E. Asia and China if that too is available although I am aware that it is rather limited.

Thank you.

Salutations

I downloaded Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe NT v9 and obtained a unlock code.

That works very well with nRoute and Mobile PC with the GPS 20X.

Hi,

The best way for you is to buy Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe NT v9 DVD or others from a provider and install it on your PC with Gamin Mobil PC and GPS20x as I did following the message of Ken up there…

Good Luck

TQ and I see no other option but contact a local Garmin Retailer for it.

I wasn't aware that I have no Mapsource installed, I just did try with the February version but thats not helping out... either.

Cheers.
