Justa for the heck of it..
I put a little LOW QUALITY video showing Speech Recognition and Mobile PC on Youtube..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18WB4yuSr-w

Im using Vista.. those with Vista on a laptop usually have a built in mic.
Vista has built in Speech Recognition software that works fine with MobilePC as far as key commands go.
I set mine up in about 30 minutes.. now to hear what she said I just say "Press F1" and she repeats the turn directions without me ever taking my eyes off the road.

Vista users, just press your start and in command box type Speech Recognition to get it started on the tutorial.

might help some.

Messing with Voice Recognition longer...

there is a powerfull command called "Mousegrid"

Using it, you can run and use a program without ever touching a key..
Within time..you know exactly what to say and that command can be executed.
works on all parts of Mobile PC... pretty powerful stuff.

Here's an excellent MSDN article called "Look, no hands" on Vista speech recognition and using mousegrid.
