Newbe looks for good laptop GPS software for Estonia

I got my first laptop GPS, and now I need software. I live in Estonia, and maybe someone can recommend me a software that has the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). I Found Microsoft AutoRoute Europe 2007, and I made a little bit research on it. It has Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, but only has big roads on the map, and that's not what I need.

Here is a link to Garmin's City Navigator Europe. If you look at a little box at the top right of the screen you will see "MapSource Map Viewer". If you click on the "City Navigator Europe NT" link in that box you can view the map online and see if it has what you need.

Garmin's MapSource map products, like City Navigator Europe, come on a DVD with the detail maps and a program called MapSource. The MapSource program is a good tool for planning trips and managing things like saved routes and waypoints, and for reviewing tracks from other trips.

If you buy City Navigator Europe you can download a program from Garmin called nroute, at no charge, that will allow you to use those maps for navigation on your laptop. The interface looks like the MapSource program but it also has all the usual navigation features added.

MapSource and nroute are very functional programs but the interface is a little older style and is not as pretty as some other programs. nroute is probably still one of the best navigation programs available for its features. MapSource has all the basic features for trip planning but there are other programs with other features.

It's not the best, but its better then AutoRoute 2007.

Can someone tell me, can I use this GPS device, Globalsat BU 353, with Garmin City Navigator Europe? Or I need a Garmin GPS?

Garmin City Navigator Europe is a map, not a program. If you are using it with nRoute, you will need a product like GPS Gate to provide Garmin GPS information from a Globalsat BU 353. nRoute only works with Garmin GPS information but GPS Gate can convert NMEA signals to Garmin PVT.

Unless you have an older version of MapSource, there is no GPS tracking built in. If you have an older version that does have tracking, then yes, I beleive it will work with NMEA. I can't remember which version as I don't have them installed any more.

I have mapsource 6.13.4

You can look at the maps in MapSource 6.13.4 but it has no GPS functionality. You will have to download nRoute (free) from Garmin and use a Garmin GPS. Or use your GPS with GPS Gate to provide a GPS signal for nRoute.

I found out that garmin city navigator needs unlocking after you buy it. Can I unlock it when I dont have a garmin gps?

I believe you could not unlock a Garmin map without a Garmin GPS. And once unlocked it would only work with that GPS even in nRoute.

Garmin is a hardware company that sell maps to support its hardware products. The only software-only product they sell is Mobile PC. I don't think a European version is available yet.

And he showed me that map on that page and there is detailed coverage of Tallinn and Riga.
And when he open Metroguide on Mapsource then there isn't detailed coverage of Tallinn just some main roads. Why is that?

The Garmin map viewer on the right of your link will show the detail. You should check that for your area of interest before buying the product.
