Garmin GPS 20x

Which regular garmin unit is the 20x gps unit similiar to?


I have the 200w nuvi and like it but wish I would have bought the best.

what features does the 20x have or does not have compared to the expensive units.

Garmin GPS 20x is a USB GPS receiver that plugs into a laptop computer. It can be purchased alone (about $60), or as a package ($100) with laptop GPS navigation software called Garmin Mobile PC. The USB GPS receiver is shown on the photo above. You can read more about the software in our Garmin Mobile PC review.

thanks for the info.... does anyone know what the software in the gps 20x is comparable to the the standard line. like a nuvi 260 or 560 or what?

It has all the features of top of the line Nuvis but no remote control. Remember though that you need a laptop to enjoy this product and a touch screen makes it even better.

All the Nuvis are standalone devices.

I have the nuvi 200w and liked so much I decided to get the 20x to put on my laptop to see the BIG PICTURE.

i DONT have a touch screen on the laptop but will have to use the keys to navigate thru the menu.

I was hoping someone could tell me what additional features the 20x will give me over and above the nuvi 20x.

I understand that the 20x has text to speech

I have a 200c but I think the 200w is a little better.

Mobile PC has text-to- speech. It says street names instead of saying, for example turn left in 500 feet.

It can save and show tracks.

It can save more than one route and reorder the multiple stops on a route to be more efficient.

It is easier to edit routes.

You can get back to the main screen with one click.

It can work directly with your contacts in Microsoft OUtlook (newer than 2000).

The screen is way bigger.

I also found a comparison of units on the garmin site but they did not offer the 20x in comparing the nuvi line

The GPS 20x is not a Nuvi. The Nuvi is a self contained device capable of tracking satellites and showing location and route on a built-in screen.

The actual product is Garmin Mobile PC (available as a package with the GPS 20x). As this is software, Garmin would not put it in a comparison chart with Nuvis. However the Mobile PC interface mimics the Nuvi. The advantage is you use your laptop screen and keyboard. The disavantage is you have to mount your laptop and power it in your vehicle.

I have a comparison picture with the Nuvi 200c and a laptop, tablet,UMPC and PDA here. All but the Nuvi and PDA are running Mobile PC

Hi John,

Terry is trying to tell you that the NUVI products are navigation devices and the GPS 20X is not a navigation device. It is simply a GPS receiver. It just receives the GPS signals, converts them to GPS location data and transfers the data to whatever you connect it to. It has a USB connector to connect it to a personal computing device (laptop, UMPC, etc.) with navigation software one it. As you can see from the picture that Terry posted, the GPS-20X is a very small device that has no display screen and it has no navigation software in it. As Terry said, it cannot be compared to the NUVI or to any other personal navigation device because it isn't one.

It's the Mobile PC software on the PC (laptop, UMPC, whatever) that turns your PC into a personal navigation device. It is the Mobile PC software that has the features that you can compare to the NUVI features. Of course most laptop PCs do not have GPS receivers built into them. That's why you need the GPS-20X receiver for Mobile PC to work.

I am sooooo sorry that I am not making my self clear> I ordered the mobile pc software and the gps20x as a package. I have a laptop. I would like to know how the software of this package along with my laptop compares to to which nuvi system

Welcome to the world of Laptop GPS navigation. I don't think you will be disappointed. As you are already familiar with the Nuvi interface, you will have no problems operating Mobile PC as a routing and navigation tool. We hope to hear more from you in this group with your impressions and suggestions for improvement.

What you won't see in Mobile PC are some of the non-navigational extras that come with the high end Nuvis such as; MP3 player, photo viewer, World clock, currency converter, etc. Of course, all of this is available on a laptop anyway with minimal software. The only hardware you would have to add to duplicate some of the higher end Nuvis would be an FM transmitter to play the sound through your car radio.

My car radio has an input for MP3 players so I just connect a cable from the laptop (or my cheapo 1GB MP3 player) to the radio, switch it to AUX IN and I'm good to go for MP3's.

The radio also has a six-CD changer in it, but with the ability to play MP3 and WMA files off CD or off the AUX Input the changer seems like way overkill. I can fit enough tunes on one CD or my cheap MP3 player to get me from here to the BC border (that's a province and two-thirds) before they start to repeat.

My apologies for not being able to provide a better comparison between Mobile PC features and Nuvi features. I don't have a Nuvi to compare to. And the feature list for Nuvis is all over the map because there were about a gazillion different models the last time I looked on Garmin's site, with new ones being added at the rate of about 3 per hour, I think.
