Not Quite GPS, looking for planning package

I’m not at all new to GPS/Laptop navigation, but I’m hoping to find a package that will help us plan our next excursion.

What I want is something where I can propose a routing and the package will provide a list with estimated distances (travel time) to attractions not on the list of stops.

For Example; if one has planned to go from Sioux Falls to Yellowstone, it should come up and tell me that both Mount Rushmore and Devil’s Tower are not far off your intended path. SA come close to this with the “Along the Way”, but that is limited to 10 miles. Even if you are already traveling and running in GPS-Radar mode it is limited to a 25 mile radius and will not point out either of the examples.

Before I abandon S&T (version unknown) it did no better at this, but I might be willing to look again.

If there is a package out there that does this, please tell me all about it.

Hi Matt,

:welcome: to Laptop GPS World.

Many people feel DeLorme Street Atlas and Microsoft Streets & Trips are the best trip planning software programs around. You have already worked with Street Atlas, why not giving Streets & Trips a try for comparison.

Well Marvin,

I got the Streets & Trips trial running and worked it as hard as I could figure out to do. I do want to thank you for pointing me that way or I would never have found it on my own.

It still doesn't even come close to what I am hoping to find.

When ask it for museums along the route (yes - you can get more than the 10 miles Street Atlas allows), you get an un-rated list sorted either alphabetically or by distance from the route. This puts the village historical society at the same priority as the Field Museum (Chi).

In my test run from Rapid City to Yellowstone (I qualifying run I use just for this), it did pick up Mt Rushmore, but still misses Devil's Tower.

The sorting by distance from the route can be valuable because it will flag the location with a tap, but it still means you have to got back to the web and try to find out something more.

thanks
