What's the best laptop GPS software for me?
Jeff1
Have there been any updates for the laptop and GPS software since 5 years ago?

Thanks in advance
Jeff

Hi Jeff, and welcome to the forum. Microsoft and DeLorme still seem to update their software annually. Users who have purchased Lifetime Maps for their Garmin Mobile PC software still should be fine, too. But yes, there isn't much else for the PC platform at the moment.

The company that is most serious about keeping their products up to date is ALK with their CoPilot Live products.

They have products for all mobile platforms including laptops running Windows 7 and 8.

As far as I can tell they are the only company that is truly on top of things today. DeLorme and Microsoft still keep their products alive with new map data but haven't done much else. I have not seen any serious action from anyone else.

I'm using Copilot on my phone and tablet and it would be my first choice if I was going to seriously put a laptop back into service for navigation.

If you want something that gives you the same kind of navigation experience as Mobile PC or iGuidance or the standalone devices from Garmin or TomTom or Magellan you should take a serious look at CoPilot.

I would love to try CoPilot on a Windows 8 laptop with touchscreen.

EDIT: Oops, here's the laptop link.

While CoPilot Live Laptop works fine on Windows 8 and 8.1, the company appears to be no longer updating the product. While there was a major update to the truck version, the regular one was not included.

I am led to believe the maps are updated regularly. However I have never experienced it. This could be something about the outback of Canada but Navteq is years ahead.

The maps on my tablet and phone update as often as my Garmin lifetime maps. They're Navteq and seem to be the same vintage. POIs are about the same quality and quantity.

I forgot about the lack of a recent update for the laptop version. Are there features it needs? I should probably buy it and take a look.

Streets in my area on CoPilot compare to MetroGuide Canada v5. I don't have a Metroguide Navteq version right back to CNNA NT 2008 that is that wrong! However, as I said, this could be a selective issue just as with S&T in other areas.

If I'm reading it correctly the map data on my phone and tablet is Feb, 2013. There is a tremendous amount of housing development going on in Regina and the ALK maps are keeping pace as well as my Garmin maps.

CoPilot updates their maps on a Quarterly basis. The only downside to that is that for North America, it's a 1.3gig download.
