Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
I'm afraid there is no European version of ALK CoPilot for laptops at the present time. The same goes for South Africa. You may have better luck with other products for those geographical areas. Visit some of our other forums here, and perhaps start with Garmin Mobile PC forum.

If the Atlas DW700 receiver outputs standard NMEA it will work with Garmin Mobile PC on your laptop.
Garmin has maps available for South Africa and all of Europe.
Unfortunately, if you want to continue to use your Atlas receiver you must buy the software-only version of Mobile PC and you cannot add maps to the software-only version. You can buy the software-only version with Europe maps but you won't be able to add the South Africa maps.
In order to use both Europe and South Africa maps in Garmin Mobile PC you would need to buy the version of Mobile PC that comes with a Garmin GPS receiver. It would come with Europe maps included and you could buy and add the South Africa maps.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
I'm have a new laptop that came with GPS and CoPilot Laptop 11, so my comments need to be taken in that context. But I am having a terrible time figuring out how to use the software. Just completing a trip plan and then executing it while travelling is not at all intuitive. Some of the streets (MAIN roads in reasonable sized towns) come up with 'street name unknown'. My location does not update very frequently, so it always looks like I am somewhere that I am not.
I'm looking around to get some different software, and wondering what is the best (most userfriendly). I'm not looking for a lot of sophisticated options, but just straightforward, accurate, etc.
Don't know if that helps with your question or not.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Hi Linda,
What is your main focus for navigation?
Laptop navigation programs come in generally two flavours. There are those that are really strong for pre-trip planning, including the ability to do complex routing with lots of stops. Microsoft Streets&Trips would be one of these as well as DeLorme Street Atlas.
And there are those that try to make your laptop more like the automotive navigation devices, like those Nuvi and Magellan and TomTom devices you see advertised all the time. These programs are very similar in the way they work except you get the advantage of the laptop's nice large screen. This would include programs like Garmin Mobile PC and iNav iGuidance.
There are reviews of the various programs on this site so it's probably worth taking a look through them to see what appeals to you most. It would also be helpful in making recommendations if you could be a little more specific about the features you want to use and what relative importance they have. You don't need to be technical. Just tell us in plain language what sorts of things you want to be able to do and we can help get you pointed somewhere.
It would also help to know what country you are in. Some manufacturers are better than others for their map coverage of various parts of the planet.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Wow, Ken. Thanks for your helpful information.
I find that in CoPilot, I can't easily find the functions I want to do. I'm mostly looking for a product that is similar to that automotive navigation devices, I guess. I won't be doing a lot of detailed preplanning...just would want to get from where I am to a point of interest in another city when I'm on the road (ie, find the nearest Starbucks, or get to an airport, or to a specific address of someone I know). You mentioned Garmin Mobile PC, and that is one that I was looking into, so you may be confirming my suspicion. I'm really just looking for something pretty simple to use to find places.
I live in the US (in Boulder, Colorado) and would be doing 95% of my travel in the US or Canada. If possible, I would like to be able to buy additional maps (e.g. of France for a trip I'm taking next year).
Thanks for all your help on this!
Linda

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Glad to help, Linda.
Hop over to the Mobile PC and iGuidance sections of the forum and check out the reviews. If you have specific questions about features and things you can do a quick search in the relevant section. If you aren't very experienced you will probably find that someone else has already asked the question and there are probably already some good answers.
I would suggest you take a look at the Navmii section, too. It's got a really sweet interface. But they don't have their North American maps available yet so we have not been able to evaluate them.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
You all were so helpful that I am back again for more information. :-)
I went ahead and got Garmin Mobile PC and it is perfect...just what I was looking for. Now, however, when I use it on my Dell Mini 1010 (with an internal GPS), I find that the GPS tracking is not great. I am always (physically) ahead of where the Dell thinks I am. So, I am not getting warnings when I need them to turn, etc. I am thinking of getting the Garmin 20X that goes with it, but wonder two things.
Will the Dell get 'confused' with two GPS devices? Is there a way to 'turn off' the internal one when I connect the 20x via USB? Does anyone have experience with the 20x and does it seem to have good performance?
Any help you can offer is appreciated! Thanks,
Linda

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
I am glad to hear the internal GPS works with Mobile PC. The problem may be where the GPS receiver is located in the laptop. It may not be getting a clear view of the sky based on where you mount it.
If you already have Mobile PC, don't get the 20x. A better choice would be the GlobalSat BU-353 if you are staying with USB as it has a larger antenna. You may be able to turn off the internal GPS but you should be able to choose which one to use anyway.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Hi Linda,
Glad you have found something you like. I agree with Terry. If you have the software-only version of Mobile PC you will likely be much happier with a non-Garmin receiver (don't ask...) like the Globalsat BU-353 he mentioned or similar.
Now that you have Mobile PC it would be good if you could ask your questions in the Garmin Mobile PC forum. Thanks.

Hi eng.qadri, and welcome to the forum. Where are you located, and how you plan to use the GPS functionality of your netbook PC?
