Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
All this nonsense should have been worked out before the damn software went on sale. Charging people $200 for something that still has a lot of bugs in it. They probably would have the perfect software if they would just listen to their customers and stop shooing people away with them one-line answers.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
One other issue that I forgot to put in the email to them, but I did discuss with on the phone:
This one is mainly for the truck version. In the trip planning options, "Take Breaks During Trip", where you can specify how long to take a break for after so many hours of driving. The maximum time you can set it to take a break for is 8hrs. While that's all fine and good for the general public, it won't work for truck drivers, as we have to have a minimum of 10hrs off after a maximum of 11hrs driving.
Ya - this program is *REALLY* truck specific...
I'll have to call them tomorrow and remind them of this one.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Well sorry to say actually but I've officially given up on ALK CoPilot once and for all. I tried to give it a go again but never was able to get it to operate correctly as it consistantly looses signal.
I was on the phone with tech support for over an hour as they were trying to figure out why it would have such a hard time recognizing my usb reciever.
http://www.deluoelectronics.com/cust...vStick_USB_GPS
With thier help finally got it to work, that is untill the next day since then it has never been able to locate. He did say that there was a conflict with this brand, he believes, but there isn't fix at this time. I was very disapointed with this version for various reasons but it won't even work now. I paid $69 USD and will get a full refund but I couldn't imagine paying that much for it let alone $100+ USD.
I ordered Garmin Mobile PC and it just shipped out.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
I have used ALK CoPilot 9 extensively for years & found its operation intuitive and user-friendly (my wife actually could modify routes while underway). All that was needed was to DRASTICALLY update the mapping, clean up the POI programming, GREATLY expand the POI database, and tweak a few glitches. Simple, direct, job done!
Instead, Version 11 retains the same, outdated maps, but made them less useful (e.g. you no longer can point to a street or a POI and see its name,).
And that intuitive operation, which we so enjoyed has been abandoned--apparently to make ALK CoPilot look more like Garmin or TomTom (either of which I recommend in preference to this sad version of ALK CoPilot).
I only hope ALK has not modified its excellent return policy, as my Version 9--with all its shortcomings--has been reinstalled in my laptop, and the Version 11 has been mailed back for a refund.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
I must agree that ALK CoPilot 11's maps are WEAK at best. I like the layout and it does correct quickly, it does does not choose the quickest route and does not have many streets, that the old CP's had.
I'm going to use it and pray for updates and patchs. I do hope they read our thread? They do not have an excuss for poor maps, not when the earlier versions were so much better. I think we need to stay after them.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Actually - that's a good idea - I do believe I'll send a link to this post directly to the person who emailed me back with the projected release date of the patch.
Of course, we're talking about ALK's time. Version 11 was originally supposed to come out last June and it finally hit the shelves, what, February?

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
ETA's are only estimates , and they are quite often not met, not just by ALK, but also by many others. But do let us know if/when you find more details. It'll be much appreciated.
grobinson, welcome to the forum! It's great to have you, a very experienced ALK CoPilot user, here.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Have just received my copy of ALK CoPilot 11 Truck version and am trying to setup the gps usb receiver per the instructions. While my computer is recognizing that the receiver is attached via a usb port, my usb ports are not numbered as "com1, com2, com3" etc. They are just listed as usb ports. When I plug in the receiver, it is listed as being in usb location J, not a numbered com port. The gps setup software looks for the receiver in number com ports and thus cannot locate it on my computer. Any suggestions?

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released
Hi mgloege,
Welcome to Laptop GPS World.
My first though would be to just plug the USB GPS receiver into a different USB port to see if that helps. Hopefully others will suggest more things to try.
When you get it working, you are most welcome to post pictures of you truck installation in our new 'Pictures & Albums'. More info: Pictures & Albums - A New Feature of Laptop GPS World.
At another forum I just read the following:
Quote:
I've been given the CoPilot Truck GPS to evaluate for our company. I'll work with it for a few weeks and then submit a report on it along with recommendations on whether we'll use it or not. I'll pass the report along on here as well.
So far, I'm not impressed. I tried it in my car today and even though I set it for a 53' trailer and truck routes, it still tried to route me down a street no wider than an alley.
I'll keep messing with it and see what happens.

It was posted at a forum in the trucking industry ( www.truckingboards.com). I will check from time to time to see if the original poster gives more feedback on his experience with CoPilot. If anyone is interested, here's the direct link to the thread: CoPilot Truck GPS - Truckingboards Truck Driver Forums.

Thanks for the response Marvin. I tried all six of my usb slots. Same results. No luck. The usb slots are functioning properly as I can use other plug and play devices with no problem.

That's awesome! I've only once had the need to call them (regarding version 10), and I was quite impressed how fast a real person answered the phone, and how quickly my issue was solved. I posted about it: ALK telephone technical support ALK telephone technical support.
