Hi nikon90s,

to Laptop GPS World.

I hear your frustration. Let us all hope ALK will use some of the feedback from their customers to make CoPilot 12 better than ever.

I like your idea of using the combination of two software programs, Microsoft Streets & Trips and ALK CoPilot. It does make a lot of sense. By the way, check out the new 2009 version of Streets & Trips. You can download a 60-day free trial, too. Click for more info.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

I love Copilot - 9 that is or PPC 6 - I have that running on my pocket pc phone and it rocks also. I had 4 and 9 is better than 4, while 11 is a joke compared to 9. Copilot 11 is so bad I feel there should be a class action lawsuit against ALK for defrauding any customers that bought this - especially those of us that paid to upgrade. I use GPS everyday, 9 that is. They need to support it, update the maps, and ditch the whole 11 mess.

Hmmm... That class action lawsuit does sound kind of interesting.

What I was told by the technician at ALK the last time I called was that users of v11 can get a free upgrade to v12 when it comes out because of the number of issues with it.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

That is nice. However, I feel they should halt the selling of this version now. The future success of the product line is in our best interest if we want continued support and updates to the line - and having a dud product like version 11 on the market hurts the company. I have heard many people on trucking websites and even on the road on the CB badmouthing copilot as junk, and if all you had to base it on was version 11 I understand.

Copilot has always required a little work to get used to. It is not a simple plug and play intuitive product like say a Garmin, but that's alright as it serves a different need. I love copilot 9 and hope 12 continues its legacy.

BTW - Copilot has a fix for the problem of having to activate the GPS every time you start the program - it is on the version 11 support page on their website.

I don't seem to have that problem of having to activate the GPS every time I start CoPilot. But could you post the link to the support page for the GPS fix for others?

I do. What worse it requires maybe 10 clicks to go through whole circle to activate GPS. At least half of them is not necessarily (or rather shouldn't be) and may be dangerous (when some one already drives ) So please, give us that link

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

Here's the link for the annoying "GPS must be activated every time you start your program" problem. I have not tried it as I just use v9. So not promising it will work, someone post whether or not it works would be nice.

It works with Windows XP. Thanks. First time I could start CoP 11 without clickink 10 times just to find my GPS receiver. That's great. Now if only I could make it run without changing my screen resolution?

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

This might help ya with the screen resolution problem. It won't run full screen in a wide format, but it'll run without you changing the resolution:

Go to this directory:
C:\Program Files\Alk Technologies\CoPilot Laptop\App
Open this file into notepad:
Preferences.CFG
Look for this section (Your values may be different):
[Graphics]
"ForceScreenX"=1440
"ForceScreenY"=900
"FullScreen"=1
"LockOrientation"=1
"RotateDisplay"=1
"ScreenXPos"=0
"ScreenYPos"=0
Here are the resolutions it supports (X * Y):
800 x 600
1024 x 600
1024 x 768
1152 x 648
1280 x 720
1280 x 800
1280 x 960
1280 x 1024
1360 x 768
1600 x 1200
1680 x 1050
Change the "ForcescreenX and Y" to match the biggest one that your laptop screen will take without going off the sides or the top of the screen. Then change the "Fullscreen" value to "0" and save the file. restart CPT and it will be in the resolution that you chose with no crashes.

Here is my graphics section for my setup (laptop is running @ 1440x900):
[Graphics]
"ForceScreenX"=1360
"ForceScreenY"=768
"FullScreen"=0
"LockOrientation"=1
"RotateDisplay"=1
"ScreenXPos"=0
"ScreenYPos"=0

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

A little help please.

Does CoPilot 11, in rv mode, inform that the Taconic Parkway in New York is off limits to recreational vehicles? Or for that matter, any, of the Parkways in New York?

Now I will give you that nearly all clearly state that travel is for auto's only EXCEPT the Taconic at the Mass Pike side where the access is marked with height restrictions only.

For what the program cost should not this info be readily displayed OR are we not doing something right?

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

The real question is, do any of the navigation products -- Streets&Trips, iGuidance, Mobile PC, Street Atlas, etc. -- provide this information?

How many of them even let you tell them that you are operating an RV (or other large vehicle)? Isn't CoPilot the only one with an RV/Truck mode?

...ken...

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

Of the two we have, only CoPilot has a rv option, but as near as we can figure it is a height selection only with no indicators concerning disallowed routes.

I guess it all comes down to which is more important, not getting a pro citation or seeing the nearest takeaway.

At nearly 400% more than Street Atlas CoPilot has room for improvement, and why these companies haven't introduced regional programs is beyond me; I would divide the Country into four different regions with much more detail and dare I suggest, a campers version. This would include State Parks, private campgrounds, rv service facilities, dump stations, police and medical care facilities, truck stops with and without overnight parking.

I am confident in saying it would be, if accurate, the most sought after software of its kind.

Re: ALK CoPilot Live Laptop 11 has been released

Works fine for me. A 'user' and a 'truck driver' for US Express, I have had this program on my Dell inspiron 1521 under Windows Vista for Business from February 2008. The program used to 'hang' frequently until a word from tech support advized screen resolution should be 1280x800. After that, all works fine. I would like to see more info 'for truck drivers' especially 'all truck stops with/without scales, rest areas and especially Canada. All in all, works fine for me and I use it every day as I am on the road, Canada to Texas, California to the Bronx and now on my in Florida.

Doesn't the USX system use CoPilot?
