Does Pharos USB GPS-500 receiver work with DeLorme Street Atlas 2009?

Hi , I'm new in this forum and I have a little problem. I have Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 with GPS receiver Pharos 500 and I bought Delorme Street Atlas 2009. I would like to know if I can use my Pharos GPS 500 with the street atlas 2009 , i tried it but street atlas does not detect the gps even when i go in the option and put generic NMEA. If someone could help me with that just tell me if it works and how to do it .
Thank you.

Re: Does Pharos USB GPS-500 receiver work with DeLorme Street Atlas 2009?

The Pharos 500 comes with a driver to convert its output from USB to a COM port. When you specify the COM port to SA 2009 it will work.

To determine the COM port to use, go to Device Manager in Windows (right click on 'My Computer'and select Properties -in XP, Device Manager is a button on the Hardware tab/ for Vista, select Device Manager from the Tasks list on the left). Expand the Ports listing by clicking on the plus sign next to it. The listing for your GPS will give you the COM port.

In SA 2009, change Device to Generic NMEA as you did and the Port to the COM listed above.

Hi Terry, thanks for your reply , i tried what you said , but when i click OK or Apply i got this message every times '' Invalid location. Could not recognize the latitude text. ''
Maybe i should uninstall the program and install it again ?
If you know something else i could try let me know ,
thanks again.

I tested it and the combo of Pharos 500 and SA 2009 works fine. I have never seen that message but it does show up on the Delorme forum.

See if you can track down the solution there.

Glad to hear you got that working. Street Atlas seems to be a bit touchy about languages and decimal format.

Our version of SA likes to uncheck the 'auto gps detect' itself-wierd.

The Microsoft drivers are junk, I had a lot of problems with the same unit having the drivers suddenly disappear and a USB mouse pop up in it's place in the Device Manager and other glitches when you needed the unit the most

Solution: Go to http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31 and get the latest drivers for the PL-2303 Prolific GPS and they'll fix a lot of stability and recognition problems

The advantage of the Microsoft driver is it doesn't require you to change COM ports when you change USB ports. The prolific driver will set a different COM port for each USB port - very irritating!. I haven't seen the ballpoint mouse problem since Windows 98.

Re: Does Pharos USB GPS-500 receiver work with DeLorme Street Atlas 2009?

Never had a problem with the com port changing ever with or without XPort as a splitter (I have a better solution this year for a splitter)

I did also have problems using it with a splitter for running two programs at once (Dr Depth and OziExplorer with the depth plugin) and with a real serial port inputting NMEA depth sentences ... Once I ditched the Microsoft provided drivers and used the Prolific drivers out last May, I never had a problem again

Nothing more frustrating than trying to make a hydrographic map and all your depth readings are plotted in one place because the GPS decided to bail again ... Hopefully the GPS in the Gobi 1000 WWAN module in my new Acer One will play nice with my depthfinder/fishfinder, I'll have to use a USB to serial converter since there are no real serial ports available on the Acer netbook and oddly all three I have are all PL -2303 Prolific based even though each is a different brand
