Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
I bought a new 64 bit Vista machine, but cannot install MAPSOURCE on it. I get the message "Windows Installer could not be accessed" when I try with the latest version 6.15, and a different error when I try the original CD. Garmin techies have not been able to help. At the same time, there is no problem installing it on my XP machine. Any ideas?

They tried and tried, but without success and said it was a windows issue, to do, I think, perhaps with the register

Re: Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
Did they confirm that Mapsource has been tested and normally works on 64-bit Vista? Are they saying that the problem is only on your system?

Re: Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
I have no experience with 64-bit Vista. ...... Well, actually I installed it on a new system I built in January but after I tried installing some of the stuff I want to use and ran into driver issues I reformated the drive and installed XP Pro instead.
I have two systems with 32-bit Vista. One of the things I've found with installing software on Vista is to make sure the installer gets admin priviledges. If I'm installing from removable media (CD/DVD), I create a shortcut on the desktop for the SETUP.EXE file on the disk and set the shortcut to "Run as Administrator". If I'm installing from a downloaded .EXE file, I drag a copy of it onto the desktop or create a shortcut and set it to "Run as Administrator".
The Garmin techs probably already had you try it, but it's worth mentioning just in case.

Yes, I tried that and get the message: "Windows installer could not be accessed; ..can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if Windows Installer not properly installed.."

Re: Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
There seems to be a lot of information on that error on the web, not necessarily related to a specific program installation. This one looked interesting.

Re: Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
Thank you.
I had come across that one, and I tried the first suggestion, but this did not work.
As I non tech person, I am afraid to try the second one as I am afraid to damage the registry. I think that is where the problem lies, as the Garmin person was suprised that there did not seem to be a Garmin folder created in the registry related to "Local Machine\Software". (A Garmin folder does get created in the Registry for "Current User\Software"
I don't know where to turn: Garmin says its a Microsoft issue, Microsoft says the warranty is covered by the Computer Manufacturer who preloaded the system (Gateway), and Gateway of course say they don't cover issues related to 3rd party (Garmin) software.

Re: Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
The problem is Microsoft rather than Garmin related. However, Microsoft is correct in referring you to Gateway. I don't think you can solve it that way. You need to find a local computer shop (I don't mean big box store). I bet a computer geek could solve it in a couple of minutes. Ask your friends or coworkers for a recommendation.
I'm surprised you don't have problems installing other programs with an msi issue.

Re: Cannot instal Garmin Mapsource on 64 bit Vista
I just experienced a similar MSI error message while updating one of my XP boxes from MapSource 6.15.4 to 6.15.6 via a download. I didn't bother to track it down though. I just copied MapSource.exe from one of the other computers. It doesn't appear any of the other files are necessary as it starts fine. Something to consider.
