Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
Where can you get a trial version of Mobile PC? I'd like to try it out.

How does the 'Demo' work? I'm guessing you can download only the application with no map data at the above link. Would you then need your own compatible maps?

It can be started as a trial.
15 days I think.

I hope Marvin doesn't mind ... here's a thread on where to get it and how to install it. Messages #3, #4, #5 in the thread will be the most relevant for you. Be sure to read #3 and #4 before you try installing. If you have WinZIP you won't need unRAR.
You need a set of Garmin detailed maps to really use it effectively but I think there's a basemap with it that will let you see the display and you will be able to try out all the features and functions. Search probably won't work too well without detailed maps but you will be able to try the search features to see how you would use them. Routing will be limited to the roads on the basemap.
EDIT: Marvin, message #5 in the above thread will answer the question about getting maps into Mobile PC from Mapsource.

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
Ok - now I'm confused. Those are updaters, not any trials. I've tried every download and it tells me that there's nothing to update or it can't find any devices.

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
Ken, thanks for the link. But as malaki86 says, that link seems to be just for updates - I don't think it was meant to be released as a trial, even though some users discovered a work-around.

by the way, if somebody would like to try, it is not required to have initial version. Just download this one, rename exe to rar, extract with unrar and run msi setup. There is 15 days trial period for the software.
Just for clarification, once the files are extracted it is the "MAIN.msi" file that we need to run. The Setup.exe file will check for a previous installation and fail. It took me a couple of tries to figure that out.
The download doesn't include maps. I have Mapsource and half a dozen Garmin map products loaded. Is there some way I can get Mobile PC to recognize any of those maps? I couldn't figure out how to get it to do that so there is no map display. Without detailled maps there's not much I can do with the trial.

thanks for the info Ken

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
To those with a comment that the download is an "updater" ... in my message I specifically said to read messages #3 and #4 of the thread I linked to before trying to install. It's made quite clear in those two messages how to install it without an original installation.
Ben, thanks for posting the relevant excerpts from messages #3 and #4 in the linked thread.
Marvin, thanks for splitting this off into its own thread.

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
I just want to make sure I got the right thing. When I extracted and ran the Main.MSI installer, it created a Garmin directory. Inside this directory is one program called Gstart.exe. When I run it, all I get is a gStart icon in the taskbar. Opening that, it says that it can't locate a Garmin GPS device. I've tried closing GPSGate, but that still didn't do anything.
Am I missing something?

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
I'm downloading the installer from the 1st link shown. The last one I tried is the one mentioned in the offsite thread. I'll let ya know what happens with that one.

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
I uninstalled Mobile PC when my free trial period ran out a couple of days ago so I can't help much with what gets created in a good installation. If you continue to have problems I'll try to reinstall and see what goes where.
If the trial installation doesn't have at least a basemap for you to play with let us know and I'll point you at one.

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
Well - using the 2nd download did the trick. I got it installed and was able to run the program. However, it has no maps at all. Also, I guess MobilePC won't work whatsoever with GPSGate - it needs direct access to a GPS receiver.

Re: Is there a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC?
A member named "woofnstuff" says that XPort Version 1.21 works w/ Garmin Mobile PC.
I tried version 1.22 and failed but on a brighter note I did get GPSGate to work off a virtual port created by XPort. Hopefully w/ time I can get everything to run off of one GPS receiver, It's a rather odd round about way of doing things but hopefully I can get Garmin, iGudiance, S&T2007, Delorume, VisualGPS and GPSGate to all play together nicely.
