Laptop GPS World

I just installed it on another computer. This is a PIII 600 and I almost died of old age before Net 2 was completed. However it installed fully. I entered my product key and it said it was contacting the Garmin servers. It successfully activated.

It had trouble finding my Bluetooth GPS 10x so I shut down Mobile PC, paired the GPS in Bluetooth and let Mobile PC find the Comm port assigned. Worked like a charm but Mobile PC didn't know it was a Garmin GPS. I think not searching Bluetooth properly was a problem I saw before when I hadn't updated to 5.00.10.

I must have a magic Product key.

Okay, one last question. Have you used only the Product Key to activate all of your systems? Or did you do the first activation (or any of your activations) using your Garmin GPS receiver instead of the Product Key?

That is, when presented with the screen asking "Did this purchase of Garmin Mobile PC include a Garmin GPS receiver?", did you ever click the "Yes" button?

Oh foooey!!! Now I'm totally confused.....

I decided to make one last try at activating my other desktop. So I entered the Product Key. It contacted the Garmin server to attempt activation. ......

............

And it worked!!!

I did not choose yes as I assumed that meant the GPS 20x.

Are you saying you now have 2 computers activated? Better do all the rest before something changes.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. ... Well, actually I have all three activated. The desktop that I originally activated is still activated. My laptop activated yesterday and today I was able to activate my other desktop.

Not that I care about the activation on the two desktops. My basement office doesn't travel very far. But it does make it easier for me to do some of the planning and stuff to have the maps unlocked on the desktop as well as the laptop.

It's beginning to look like you simply need to wait a day or two before trying to activate a subsequent installation.

Terry, have you activated more than one on the same day?

Marvin, you might be able to activate the second computer if you try it today or tomorrow.

Ken, I will definitely try to play with it a bit more over the next few day. Just as you, I personally don't care about being able to use GPS navigation on more than one PC, but reading about this inconsistent behavior of the activation process will just not let us stop till we find how it is supposed to work.

I believe I activated the UMPC and the laptop on the same day. That was a while ago so I can't say for sure. It might have been before and after midnight.

It is more likely that your call to Garmin caused them to shut down the activation limit block on your code.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!!

Nope, that can't be it because I tried activation at least three times yesterday after I installed it on my other desktop. No joy. Got the activation error that Marvin displayed above. If the activation limit was overridden on my code I would expect that the other desktop should have activated on the first pop, not a day later.

I think some programmers in Olathe, Kansas are laughing their heads off right about now.

I got a reply to a suggestion for a change to Mobile PC at 08:40 PST today so maybe they work Sundays.

I installed software only yesterday on laptop (activated with product key) then on desktop (would not activate with product key).

After reading this thread today, I just tried it again on the desktop and it activated after I entered the product key. So now it is working on both the laptop and desktop (at least for now).

Another vote for the next day camp. Your turn, Marvin!

Looks like I'm going to be the next to vote for next day. I just removed Mobile PC from my main computer to investigate another issue. In the process, I removed the GarminMobilePC folder as well. When I went to reinstall, it asked for my product key and blocked it.

I had installed it on another computer at about 01:30 this morning so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if you guys are onto something.

One other point you might be interested in. Although my unactivated Mobile PC can find my Garmin GPS 10x, it cannot get the GPS Unit ID. Therefore the program fails to unlock the map.

This tells me it will only work with the GPS 20x if you don't have a product key. To use my GPS, I had to start the trial. Then it ID'ed my 10x immediately.

Ok, I'm a convert. Its 12:28 and Mobile PC just activated successfully on my main pc. Guess we can ignore that 6 month warning!!
