Terry & Ken are very smart guys
And I'd like to add the obvious: Just because something is technically possible, doesn't necessarily mean it is legal. Before attempting to do anything, please read end user license agreement. As I understand it, it allows "one" user to use the product. So a family member, or a friend, etc, still needs to purchase his/her own Garmin Mobile PC. Terry and Ken, thanks for your detective work. Your analytical minds work very well.

Marvin,
I have to give the credit to Ken for proposing the next day solution. My concern was I had stated elsewhere the software version of Mobile PC could be activated on more than one PC. It is always nice to be able to plan routes on a computer other than the one in your vehicle (or one with a small screen). I think an overall limit of 3 would be the way to go with a product like this but that may be technically difficult or expensive for Garmin to implement. Ken has shown that it is moderately easy to plan a route on one computer and transfer it to another even without the use of MapSource. I think that expands the usefulness of this product beyond PNDs and some other software routing programs we have looked at. The direction was not to promote illegal sharing of any software product. As with anything, if we expect to see ongoing development and improvements, we have to pay for the products we desire Terry |

I am thinking about buying (Garmin Mobile PC) software version only, So what is the final verdit for multiple installs using 3rd party GSP receiver, you can install on two laptops if you update software first then wait and install on second laptop on a different day. I have BU-353 receiver. I am just confused after reading the comments on how to do this. Thanks jeff

Jeff, yes, it works. And if I understand the end user license agreement, the only limitation is that only one user is licensed to use the product: you. (Perhaps someone who speaks to Garmin the next time may double check on this, just to make sure we are not propagating misinformation here.)

Garmin updated their site 2 days ago.
Garmin Mobile PC (software only) no longer works on multiple PCs. If you already have it installed on more than one PC don't delete the key section as you won't be able to activate it again on a reinstall. The version with the 20x will work on any PC using this GPS but will not work with other GPS including Garmin's own 10xTerry |

Hmm. So what happens when you reformat your hard drive and you only purchased the software and not hardware ie. Garmin GPS?

Check with Garmin. I think they are able to deactivate/ reactivate GMPC now.

I rather not contact them, they tend to give inconsistent answers depending on who you talk.

They are getting more familiar with Mobile PC every time I talk to them. Up until last week, it wasn't a problem activating the product again. However, they have updated their server and it now recognizes that you have installed and activated it. I was told last week that they would be able to deactivate /reactivate the ID starting this week.
If you can't talk to them, you will never get the most up-to-date answer Terry |

I have talked to them before, I had different emails et al and one CSR disputed the other emails until he was put in his place by a senior rep. In this case, I'll wait to see what develops online since GMPC is still very new.
