Nrgizerbunny, that's excellent. Let us know how much of an improvement you will experience with your new i.Trek M7 in comparison to your "regular" 1Hz GPS receiver.
P.S. I'm in Richmond Hill (North of Toronto), in Canada. It's a bit far to travel for a pint or quart, but it is tempting .

So if anyone every gets to testing 10hz and see improvement let us know.

Hi funny718,
to Laptop GPS World. The i.Trek M7 GPS receiver (5Hz), with which I tested Garmin Mobile PC, is noticeable improvement over a regular 1Hz GPS receiver. A 10Hz GPS receiver, in my opinion, can achieve the same result, or even better - if Garmin Mobile PC is capable of handling even higher than 5Hz refresh. A 10Hz unit, Wintec G-Rays I (WBT-300), has been mentioned in http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/gps-ha...receivers.html

I rely heavily on the speedo display as my speedometer is not working properly. I noticed when I changed from Que to XT on the PDA that the speedometer updated much more smoothly; and this was using the same GPS. I can't comment on 5hz improvements but have never noticed any jerky behaviour in Mobile PC.

That's I guess a personal opinion, and I agree Terry, I wouldn't use the word 'jerky' to describe the movement of the map in Garmin Mobile PC running on a plain 1Hz GPS receiver. The movement is relatively smooth. It is just fine the way it is for most of us. But people who are perfectionists have a chance to see improvement when higher refresh rate GPS receiver is used.

Marvin, when you tried your M7, did you use a cable? can't get mine to seem to work when i use the cable but over bluetooth it seems fine.

mmm... after more chopping and changing! I've found that the usb baud rate is fixed at 115.2k. Unfortunately garmin doesn't support that so bluetooth it is!
But wow, its heaps better at 5hz! i think i'm going to leave the m7 plugged into the usb to get power but set over to bluetooth. Last edited by Nrgizerbunny; July 11th, 2008 at 10:10 AM. |

Yes, I tested it via Bluetooth. I briefly attempted USB with the same result as you've experienced. I suspected the baud rate to be the issue, but I didn't pursue it any further since Bluetooth worked very well.
I'm glad you find the difference between 5Hz and 1Hz beneficial!

yeah thanks marvin, just for your information i guess, the only thing i have found that supports 115.2k down a cable is sygic drive. Igo doesn't either. it just messes up.

If you bought your i.Trek M7 from Semsons.com, then very likely you received a free license for Franson GPS Gate (I think Semsons includes GPS Gate with purchases of various GPS receivers). GPS Gate will adjust its output baud rate to the one required by the laptop GPS software program you are using. The unfortunate part at the moment is that the current version of GPS Gate does not support Garmin Mobile PC yet, but it should work with other of your programs.
I cannot experiment with i.Trek M7 anymore, as the unit is now somewhere between here (near Toronto, ON) and Regina, SK, where Ken lives.
