Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
The USB GPS20x will not; the Bluetooth GPS10x will; the Bluetooth GPS10 will; the USB GPS18 will not; the serial GPS18 will; most, but not all older PNDs will.
Any one will work with GPS Gate to put out a GPS signal usable with other programs. However GPS Gate will not work with Mobile PC.
Which GPS receiver are you speaking of?

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking of USB GPS20x. Since I bought Garmin Mobile PC I had a reciever. I was going to try it with MS Streets and Trips. I was going to install it on my laptop and just use the same reciever I got with mobile pc.

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
Unfortunately the USB GPS20x only sends proprietary Garmin GPS data. To use it with other mapping programs such as S&T you would have to purchase GPS Gate.
http://franson.com/gpsgate/
That program can read Garmin data and translate it to the standard NMEA format used by other mapping programs.
It will also allow you to run more than one GPS program at the same time on your laptop. The shortcoming of GPS Gate is that, as of this time, Mobile PC will not recognize the COM ports it creates.

The USB GPS18 will work if used with Garmin Spanner

I don't know if 20x will work with spanner.
What chip uses the 20x SirfIII or MTK?

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
I just checked Spanner and the GPS20x with XP Home SP2. I tried it with an old version of S&T and had a location almost immediately. I would say it tested successfully.
I'll try it with Vista when I get a chance.

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
I have now installed Spanner on my HP tablet running Vista Home Premium SP1. I tried the GPS 20x with S&T 2008 and it found the signal immediately.
I would say this software works fine with the GPS20x using Vista or XP.
Thanks for reminding me of this software.

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
Bugsy,
After ProITM and Marvin mentioned Spanner, I had to try it in your situation
I tested the GPS20x on my UMPC running XP Tablet SP2. With Spanner, a free download from Garmin, running it works fine with SA 2008.

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
My question is kind of the inverse of this topic. I have Streets and Trips and the GPS receiver that came with it. I want to use/purchase the Garmin PC software to get the same functionality that my wife has on her Nuvi and put a RAM mount in my car with a tablet PC.
I want to know if I can use the GPS receiver that came with MS-S&T's with the Garmin software. From reading this and the mention of "proprietary" data I'm thinking not but I have to ask.
Thanks!
(man am I glad I found this board, this is just too cool!)

Re: Garmin GPS receiver compatibility with laptop GPS software
The Pharos GPS that comes with S&T works fine with Garmin Mobile PC as long as you buy the GMPC software-only version.
