You are right Garmin spends the cash on a product sold by another company; who in turn buy the mapping data such as topographic/quadrangle data from a government source i.e. NASA or USGS, which is funded by the US taxpayer. The only solution to the problem is to demand the companies to release the data in open source format and spend more time on building a quality product with advanced technologies; such as Bluetooth, M-RAM and 3-D interface just to start. I own a Garmin Rino 530HCx and work with Trimble units daily and we need to standardized the sub-meter accuracy, GIS programs and cartography before the need to figure a goddamn way to screw customers on a product they have already paid for.
