Default Problems sending maps from MapSource to Garmin Mobile PC

Hello Again,

I have mapsource with city navagator north america v7 and v8 installed and unlocked. I have tried to send maps and routes to mobile pc. It looks like it is doing it but then stops with the error "There is a problem communicating with the Garmin device. The filename, directory name or volume syntax is correct. Is there away to fix this?

Try just sending the routes and waypoints. That's all you need.

You will find those maps are locked when you complete the transfer so they won't be usable anyway. And they are certainly not better than the 2009 version that is built in.

Hi,donīt know which MapSource Version are using.Hope not 6.14.1;but maybe you`re are runnig Garmin Mobile PC on Windows Vista OS...if that`s so...try to give mapsource "Attributes of Administrator".
By right clicking on Mapsource Icon go to "advanced settings" ,click again and set as administrator.
If its works..the explanation is very simple.

Best regards

Jucabras,
That's a good point. Using Vista, I can't get MapSource 6.14.1 to transfer anything to Mobile PC. I get the message Bugsy mentioned even if using 'Run as ADministrator'.

I restored to 6.13.7 (had to run it twice) and I can successfully transfer information to Mobile PC from MapSource. I don't have to use 'Run as Administrator' though.

Jucabras,
This is not a Vista problem. I upgraded MapSource to 6.14.1 on my XP Home machine and it gave the same message when trying to send information to Mobile PC. It looks like a problem with that version of MapSource.

Maybe I'll contact Garmin.

Bugsy,
I hope you still have a copy of MapSource 6.13.7. if not, let me know.

Hi Terry
From the very beginning this last version of MapSource wasn`t friendly to me...as I`ve previously posted.
New Garmin MapSource Version 6.14.1

Some troubles are libraries dependant and some are because of Mapsource itself.I`ve tried every sugested procedure to make it work in both XP SP3 & Win Vista Home premium. And it doesn`t still made a good couple with Garmin Mobile PC.So I believe there are two kinds of misswork , hope the Garmin Team repairs soon with a new version.

What I`ve said it`s that in Vista cause transferring maps to GMPc ends on writing an *.img archive , if I don`t run as administrator the action aborts; but if you have a pendrive conected to an usb terminal...its transfers perfectly.

So,till new version,I`ll continue with the beautifull 6.13.1 Version.

Jucabras,
I remember the thread. I got hung up on the 'Run as Administrator' part. I didn't realize that MapSource 6.14.1 didn't work under ANY circumstances with Mobile PC. Thanks for the prod so I would test it further.

Thanks terry

Everything works now after down gradeing. I will keep this version till the new version solve this problem. One last question. So with unlocked maps mobile pc should see the routes and way points that you plot out on mapsource right. Maps still remain locked?

The routes and waypoints will work fine with the 2009 map already in Mobile PC.

The other maps you have are unlocked to a particular device, not Mobile PC.

BugsyChow,

There is an explanation about unlocking Garmin maps in the Garmin Mobile PC FAQ. Please let me know if it's still confusing so I can make it better.

Just for confirmation I've also started testing. I upgraded my desktop to MapSource 6.14.7 and I have the same problem as BugsyChow and Terry have reported. I discovered another big issue, too. I had to remove two free topo maps that have worked just fine with previous versions of MapSource. That really annoyed me. I had to manually edit the registry to remove them because there's no other way to uninstall them. Now I have to reinstall them after I reinstall MapSource 6.13.7.

This test was with XP/SP2, MapSource 6.14.1 and Mobile PC 5.00.20.
