Default Problem with Garmin GPS 18 using USB

This may be the wrong category for this, I'm new to this forum.

I have had a GPS18 on my laptop for several years, win2k OS, in serial
mode. Work'd fine.
Now, I decided to get a GPS18 USB, so I can carry th laptop around, and
not have it connected to +12vdc.

The problem now is: Nroute will not display detail, says detail is locked!
As soon as satellites are acquired and it goes to "ready to navigate" the
"detail" locks in low. It is set to high .

Serial still works just fine.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Jack

It sounds like the map set is unlocked for your serial gps18 not the gps18 usb. You may need to get another unlock code for your gps18 usb.

You could try GPS Gate with the new GPS18. It could disguise the fact that it is a Garmin GPS. As Ken pointed out in another thread, nRoute will work with locked maps as long as it doesn't know the GPS is Garmin.

Or you could call Garmin and explain your dilemma. They may be willing to give you another unlock code for your map to work with your new GPS.

Hi Jack,

What maps do you have and when did you buy them? If it has been awhile since you bought them you may be eligible for a second unlock code for the new GPS18 at no charge. Garmin used to sell their maps with two unlock codes. About a year ago they changed that policy so you only get one unlock code and you have to pay for any additional ones.

If you need more information about how Garmin's map unlocking works, you can read about it here. If it's still not clear please let me know so I can improve it.

Thanks much folks.
I bet that's the problem, the unlock code isn't for the USB.

I found this site today, in search of an answer.
I contacted Garmin last week about this, their answer was I needed a
Intel USB host controller, or I might need a different pc.

Kind of a odd answer if you ask me.

Will "call" them this week, and maybe shed some more light on this subject.

I only have one unlock code. This was purchased in 2006.

This code obviously does not have an affect on MapSource, as that
has detail in both modes.

Flash here: As I type this I just check'd , it says the GPS18 USB
"Does Not have an unlock code"!

Thanks again

Jack

Let us know how it goes, Jack. Don't let them give you the runaround about some sort of hardware deficiency on your part. It's simply that the maps are not unlocked for the new GPS18. Be very firm that the 2006 maps entitle you to a second unlock code at no charge.

WHOORAY!

I went back to the laptop, under unlock, it asks if I need an unlock code.
YES I do! Put in all the vitals, the s/n. and it loaded me a new code !

Now it works !!!

Thanks again folks for the valuable info. Been pulling my hair out out
for several days now!

This may be a good week after all !

Jack

That's great news, Jack! And thanks for the reminder that the Unlock Wizard let's you do it yourself to get a new unlock code for using existing maps with a new device. I will modify the thread in the FAQ to reflect that. I hope the rest of your week goes so well.
