Hi all,
I'm a new member of Laptop GPS World, and this seems like one of the most knowledgeable Laptop GPS forums on the web. Hopefully, one of you guys can help me out. I'm trying to use Garmin Mobile PC with my Wintec G-Rays GPS device, but it seems like the Garmin Mobile PC software can't locate my GPS device. Within the application, it is constantly searching for GPS device. The GPS device is connected to my UMPC via USB. This setup works perfectly fine with iGuidance, but Mobile PC just can't seem to locate the device. Any advice? |

Hi Big_Poppa_Pump,
No one answered so far, so I thought I would at least say to Laptop GPS World.I honestly don't know what the problem could be. Garmin Mobile PC to me seems to be very good at discovering GPS receivers - much better that some other laptop GPS software. 1. Since it doesn't work via USB, have you tested it via Bluetooth? 2. Make sure no other software is trying to use the GPS receiver at the same time while Garmin Mobile PC is trying to connect to it (close iGuidance, etc) 3. Your Wintec G-Rays GPS is capable of refresh rate as high as 10Hz. I don't have experience with 10Hz receivers, and I don't know how Garmin Mobile PC would work with it. I tested 5Hz GPS with GMPC, and that worked very well. Just for testing purposes, if Wintec G-Rays GPS is now set to 10Hz, try setting it to something lower, for example 1Hz, to see if that's the issue. When you get it working, I'd be very curious to hear if you can notice smoother map movement when switching from 5Hz to 10Hz. It could motivate me to buy a 10Hz unit.

I tested a couple of dual mode GPS this morning. The USB data rate was higher than 4800 bps on both of them. It may be the data rate of your GPS when used in USB mode exceeds the ability of Mobile PC to read it.
You can determine the USB data rate of your GPS with iGuidance by using Tools - GPS Options - Auto Detect. After a while iGuidance will tell you the COM port and data rate of your unit. If it exceeds 38,400 bps, it probably won't work with Mobile PC. Try the Bluetooth mode as Marvin suggested. Terry |

Thanks guys for the replies!
I actually got it working by upgrading to the latest version. Previously I was using the earliest version, I believe. With the latest version, I was able to connect to my GPS device using Bluetooth, but was still unable to do so using USB. The funny thing was that with the older version, I wasn't able to connect with Bluetooth either. It must have been something the developers changed in the latest version. Anyways, I'm glad to finally get it working. It's a great piece of software! I'll try to test the differences between map movement when switching from 5Hz to 10 Hz, and let you guys know. |

I'm glad you got it going. And if/when you get around to testing the 5Hz vs 10Hz, I'll be very glad to find out if the difference is noticeable. 1Hz vs 5Hz is a noticeable improvement. I think most other software programs cannot really take advantage of refresh rate higher than 1Hz, but Garmin Mobile PC can.
