Hello,
Looking to purchase the Acer Aspire One to use with my GMPC in my car. Just curious if anyone is using this combo, just want to make sure the hardware can run the software well since the CPU is not that fast. I'll also be using this as my MP3 player as well. So it will be my UMPC for use in the car to play MP3s and run GMPC. Thanks. |

I'm not familiar with that model. I have the Acer Aspire 5610 and it runs Garmin Mobile PC just fine. I have used it with both USB and Bluetooth receivers. To use the Bluetooth receiver I had to buy a Bluetooth USB dongle because my Acer laptop doesn't have the Bluetooth receiver built into it. I'm running Vista Home Premium.

isn't the Acer one a Linux system? the cpu looks fast enough..just never seen it offered with Windows...which would make the Mobile PC not compatable.
Edit: oops... see it comes with xp also.. my bad.. the 1.6 ghz cpu should be plenty!

Well to update my own thread, I bought the Aspire One with the 120gb hdd, it came with linux, blew linux away and loaded vista, and Garmin MPC, and it all works great. Vista even works well for minor things.

Since you mentioned the Acer One..I been following their prices..
seems very hard to find in stock! I might break down and get that xp version for $349.00 if they ever become in stock at some store in the USA!! Glad to hear that Vista installed.. would think it would hog the little bit of memory in this system.. All reviews for it seem pretty good.. the youtube videos on the acer one are nice also. Thanks for adding to the addiction!

MicroCenter has them in stock. I saw the blue one there last week. But you may want to look at the Dell Mini 9 also. Same Atom processor and comes with XP home. I ordered mine Last week. |

Driven and fixerofallthings,
to Laptop GPS World.I just looked up specs of both of your laptops, Acer Aspire One and Dell Mini 9. They both look awesome! Price is excellent, too. Are you guys going to mount your new laptops somehow in your cars/trucks? Photos would be appreciated

I wanted to go with XP but wireless would not work for me with XP. So I loaded Vista home and everything works. I just use this pc for GMPC & music player in my car. Sometimes I use it for Skyping and browsing on the road. For that usage Vista works well. I saw the ram mod on UTube...which I will do to help Vista out. So far I just mounted mine on my dash with a piece of velcro...which works well with no slippage at all. Might look at a mount later.

fixerofallthings, very nice CarPC setup
Driven, the fact that Velcro is enough to hold it in place, says a lot about how small and light the laptop is!

Love my new aspire 1 !!(Windows xp, 120 gig HD)
Since it doesn't have a CD drive and my version of MS Streets and Trips has a 2 CD install, I was happy to see a downloadable (new)version. I downloaded it, loaded the driver for the receiver, and it works fine. I will say that it's difficult to change views and move the cursor etc while actually driving, but I do like it. |
