Default How to install MapSource to add maps to Mobile PC

Thanks to sohsoh88 for this tip. This is for those who would like to add free Garmin-compatible maps to their Mobile PC installation but don't have MapSource.

1. Download Garmin Training Center for Windows 3.2.3: HBm`tf&Dr
2. Install (1) above Y0*EQf[Lw
3. Download latest Mapsource & nRoute from Garmin )t[WG6
4. Install Mapsource & nRoute )

As this is written, you will need to avoid the latest version of MapSource (6.14.1) because it won't work with Mobile PC. You will need MapSource 6.13.7

There are lots of free Garmin compatible maps available on the internet. This includes road maps of various parts of the world that Garmin and other map suppliers have not been able to provide. This will allow you to use MapSource to add these maps to either version of Mobile PC.

Hi,
I installed my new Mobile PC and 20x receiver.
I cannot get Mapsource to recognize the Mobile PC. I installed (MapSource_6137) and installed it twice (to overwrite the newer one I had installed.

Error is: Mapsource could not find any installed MapSource products. Please install one or more and start mapsource again.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

According to that error message, the problem is not with Mapsource not recognizing Mobile PC. The problem is that Mapsource doesn't see any maps installed.

Have you actually installed any maps into Mapsource? Did you have some installed before the reinstallations of 6.13.7?

You have to have a map segment selected before you can send it to another device such as Mobile PC. With the map showing that you are interested in, open the Maps tab on the left and choose the segment tool from the top tool bar. Click on the segments you want. They will appeaer in the Maps tab list on the left.

When you have selected all the segments you need and checked the 'Include route calculation...' if necessary, select the Send to Device icon on the top toolbar. Mobile PC should show in the Device: window or if you have more than one device, select it from the list. Make sure the Maps box is checked under What to Send. Push the send button and wait until it says it is completed.

Hi Terry,

That's a good description about how to send the map information from Mapsource to Mobile PC. But the reported error messages seems clear that wav doesn't have any maps installed in Mapsource.

If Mapsource wasn't seeing Mobile PC or if there weren't any map segments selected in Mapsource, wav would see something very different than the error message reported.

If Mapsource can't see Mobile PC, it won't show any error messages. It simply won't list Mobile PC in the "Transfer" device list.

If there are no map segments selected in Mapsource (and no waypoints, routes or tracks in the currently open Mapsource file), the error message will be "To transfer data to your device, select maps or create waypoints, routes or tracks."

Ken,
I agree fully with your diagnosis. That message would have to come up well before he got to selecting segments. However, a picture often clarifies what has to be seen on the screen before the other steps are performed. Possibly wav copied the maps to his hard drive and didn't modify the registry to point MapSource to them.

Hi Ken,
Ok, here is the deal...
All background info is a bit complicated (had an IQUE CSNA6 tried to upgrade to CNNA8 NO DVD on XP machine. Problem with orig cd disc for IQUE replaced by Garmin but never worked right.) So suffice it to say I maybe need to know how to edit the registry to direct MapSource to the folder that has the new img files for CNNA9 which is programfiles/garmin/mobilepc

That is just my quess... how do I install "maps" into mapsource?

right now I am trying to use an ISO to load CNNA8 to the xp machine to see if that helps...

Thanks!

Take a look at this thread for general directions on modifying the registry. If that is not enough information, I am sure Ken or I can be more specific for your situation.

Thanks Terry, I am trying but I just don't get it!

I mounted the ISO on my xp machine of my copy of CNNA8 it started to load got through the ULA and then it came back install disk...??? So, now I have to research what to do to get it not to look to the disk. (I'm using a thumb drive) Though I am only loading this to see if "possibly" Mapsource will see it and then I will have a basis to continue.
(MobilePC worked and loaded fine doing it with an ISO so I don't understand the problem other than I had previously loaded CNNA6 with a disk... which got deleted and now there is only an empty folder)

I am too confused right now and too tired so I will work on it more tomorrow.

Can't you just redirect it when it looks for a disk? Or burn the ISO to a CD. Or is that a machine without a CD drive?

Or copy the map files instead of an ISO, transfer them to the computer and then modify the registry to point to that folder.

CNNA v8 is locked anyway so it won't work with Mobile PC unless you have a GPS20x.

Too big for a CD would have to burn it to 2 CD's could do it and maybe I'll have to.

Haven't figured out how to edit reg yet is it only the "families" portion that needs to be edited? I have it loaded on my VISTA machine but it is not an easy copy as nothing with VISTA IS EASY.
Haven't loaded the Mobile PC to vista yet.

There is an ISO burner available as a free download...and with Vista it works with DVDs.

Modifying the registry is really easy if you have the actual map files in a folder on your drive. Only additions required are under Families. An Entry must be created called City Navigator North America v8 and another key under that called '1'. My screenshots are NT so ignore that part. Of course, your file locations would be different.

Hi wav,

It's good to hear that you got the maps loaded and Mapsource is now happy.

You mentioned something in an earlier message that has me wondering so I'll make a comment and if it's not relevant just ignore it. It sounded like you want to try to use the City Navigator 2009 map data from Mobile PC in Mapsource. You might already know this, but it won't work. If you didn't know and haven't already tried, don't waste your time.

If you want City Navigator 2009 maps to use on the iQue, it's actually a double-whammy. First, you can't use the gmapprom.img from Mobile PC in Mapsource. Second, even if you could, it wouldn't work in the iQue because the Mobile PC maps are NT and the iQue requires non-NT map data (I know because I currently own three iQues).

If you already knew all that, my apologies. It was triggered by something you said in an earlier message and I was just speculating what it might have meant.

Another thing you might already know, and just supporting something Terry already mentioned, if you want to transfer other map data to Mobile PC, like you do to the iQue, it will work exactly the same way. But, if it's a locked product like City Navigator, Mobile PC won't use it unless you get another unlock code for it (to unlock to the GPS20). There are maps out there that aren't locked that will work on both the iQue and Mobile PC. If there is something specific you are looking for, just let us know and we might be able to point you at something.
