Where are you finding the "Address option" you mentioned? The only place I can find a reference to addresses is when you click on the magnifying glass "Where to?" icon. That's all search stuff in there.
If that's where you were, that's one of the things I warned you about. The detailed map I included is just a topo map that does not contain any routing data or any address data or any POIs (Points of Interest, like gas stations, restaurants, movie theatres, hotels, etc.). So if you were trying to use the Address search, Mobile PC is telling you it can't do that without a set of detail maps that contain address search data. I wasn't able to find any detail maps containing routing and address data that were free and legal. If you want to enter addresses you use the TOOLS > Manage My Data > Favorites option. Of course for your testing purposes that's a problem, too, because the only way you can enter an address is to do an Address Search, so you probably get the same error that you need detail maps. There is a way to transfer existing "Favorites" information directly into Mobile PC but you need Garmin's Mapsource program to do that. Mobile PC is cheap enough that just buying a copy and giving it a whirl is probably the best bet. That way you have the latest up-to-date maps with all the routing data, address data, zip code data and millions of Points of Interest all loaded and ready to go. And the base map is way better than the one I included. It has a beautiful relief map display of North America as you zoom out. Sorry I couldn't be more help. ...ken... |

Hi Ken,
You said "...because the only way you can enter an address is to do an Address Search,... "There is a way to transfer existing "Favorites" information directly into Mobile PC but you need Garmin's Mapsource program to do that." Is this the only way to get addresses into Mobile PC? I though there was a way to import address, from an .xls, .txt, .dbf, etc..? Hi Again, One last question - Can you confirm that the Mobile PC receiver will work with the Delorme software? Hi David,
I'm not aware of any way to import anything into Mobile PC. That doesn't mean there isn't one, but I have not discovered one. Mobile PC acts more like it's a standalone hardware navigation device rather than a normal software program, so it doesn't have any "File" commands. You need to be able to create files that it already knows how to read and put them in the folder(s) where it expects them to be. When it runs it looks for the existance of these files and uses them if it finds them. You can use another Garmin program called Mapsource to transfer information to Mobile PC. That includes Favorites (aka "waypoints"), Routes, Tracks and other Garmin maps. Mapsource knows how to import stuff in some standard formats that are commonly used to exchange information among GPS users. If you are interested in playing with Mapsource you can just search for something like "download garmin mapsource". You will find the link to Garmin's download page for Mapsource updates. You will also find links that will tell you how to install a Mapsource update without having an existing installation of Mapsource to "update". I have no concern about telling you how to find this information because the only thing Mapsource is useful for is working with other Garmin stuff and that's what you plan to do. Mapsource is not something they sell, so you're not doing them out of any revenue. You will need Mapsource version 6.13.7 or later. Older versions aren't aware of Mobile PC. I cannot confirm that the Garmin receiver will work with the DeLorme Street Atlas software. I do not have the Garmin receiver. I have the software-only version of Mobile PC. Having said that, I'm pretty sure that you will not have any difficulty getting the Garmin receiver to work with Street Atlas. If the Garmin receiver can output NMEA data it will work directly with Street Atlas. If it only outputs the Garmin protocol you can use the Franson GPSGate program to convert the Garmin protocol into NMEA in realtime and Street Atlas will be happy. You could also check in the DeLorme section of this forum and ask if anyone has use the Garmin receiver with Street Atlas. ...ken... |
