Having the same problem on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29. I use an external USB speaker that produces audio for every application EXCEPT Garmin Mobile PC. I called their technical support, but they have no reply as of yet. Any further thoughts?

Hi 3ceholland,

Welcome to Laptop GPS World.

That's an interesting problem. I've never used USB laptop speakers myself. Does it behave the same for both, text-to-speech and also pre-recorded voices?

Greetings,

I'm OTR truck driver. Hearing anything over engine and road noise is always an issue. To date: Out of the box; nRoute has the best volume of the mapping-routing software I have reviewed. However, its volume still cannot compete with the ambient noise.

I have broadcast audio from laptop to speakers built in to tractor but that has not been satisfactory.

What works for me

Boostaroo Revolution® High Fidelity Portable Headphone Amplifier & Audio Splitter Model: #R234.

The Boostaroo Revolution is plugged into the audio output of laptop and is connected to an external CB speaker located at head level.

The Boostaroo Portable Headphone Audio Amplifier & Splitter Model: #T613 should do the job just as well, and is likely a better choice cause it does not use batteries.

luckyauto and racingturtle, to the forum!

luckyauto - do you not have any other audio options in your Garmin Mobile PC, only American English?

racingturtle - I agree, one program may be louder than another, but an external amplified speaker seems to be the best solution for me, too.

Marvin,

American English is the only one that does text-to-speech to speak the street names.

I receive the sound through the USB speaker for every other program to include all of the Mocrosoft system sounds and any other programs that produce audio. The only exception is the Garmin Mobile PC program. I can even have multiple programs open and everything except the Garmin will have the audio transmitted through the speaker. It appears to be some sort of programming issue in the Garmin software.

That's an interesting issue. Check if by any chance there is an updated driver available for the USB speaker.

Just bought Durabrand USB powered speakers for $10 (!) at Walmart. They work great (very loud) with Garmin Mobile PC.
Used the earphone jack + usb port on my laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I bought the same set at walmart...
Being in a pickup I just velcro them behind each seat.. giving me voice commands over the indash stereo sound.
also plays my mp3's nicely!
plenty of sound power for my use.

one thing to note.. you use two connections.. the USB for the power and the earphone jack for the actual sound.

My laptop mount has the lip on it, and that is the place my earphone jacks are.. which makes the laptop actually sit on the connector, not a good thing over time.. would probably wear the plug out..
quick work with a jigsaw solved that problem though..
