This message will describe how to transfer Garmin or Garmin-compatible detail maps from Mapsource to Mobile PC (or to SD cards or other Garmin devices).
You must have the Garmin or Garmin-compatible maps available in Mapsource. Quote:
1b. Make sure you have updated MapSource to the latest version. Only version 6.13.7 or later will recognize Mobile PC as a device it can transfer stuff to. 2. Run Mapsource. 3. If you have more than one map product in Mapsource, select the desired map product from the dropdown list (or VIEW > SWITCH TO PRODUCT). 4. Use the map selection tool in Mapsource (TOOLS > MAP or click the map selection tool icon in the Tools toolbar). Select the entire detailed map or only those sections that you want to transfer. 4. If your map product includes routing capabilities and you want to be able to do routing in Mobile PC, make sure that "Include route calculation data" is checked at the bottom of the Maps tab in Mapsource. It will be greyed out until you select your first map segment. You can select map segments from multiple map products to include in the compiled detailed map file that will be sent to Mobile PC. As you select segments they will be listed in the Maps tab in Mapsource and the total detailed map size will be updated at the bottom of the tab (space can be an issue with some Garmin devices or SD cards). 6. Select TRANSFER > SEND TO DEVICE in Mapsource. 7. Wait a few seconds for Mapsource to see what devices it can find. 8. Select "Mobile PC" as the device to send to. 9. The "Maps" radio button should be checked. 10. Click the SEND botton. 11. Mapsource will go through some dialogs with progress bars when it compiles the detailed maps and then transfers them. When Mapsource compiles the selected detailed map segments into a file to transfer to Mobile PC, it is combining the actual map display elements, any associated routing data for the selected map segments and any associated POIs for the selected map segments. So this might take some time, depending upon the amount of map data you have selected, how much routing data is included and how many POIs are included. Be patient, Mapsource will tell you when it's done (wait for the "Transfer Complete" dialog to appear). With some devices it is critical that you don't do anything else on your PC as Mapsource is doing the compile and transfer activities or the resulting detailed map might not work properly on the target device. The file that MapSource creates and transfers to Mobile PC (or other devices) is named gmapsupp.img. Mobile PC already has two other map files. gmapbmap.img is the basemap. gmapprom.img is the file with the City Navigator North America NT2009 detail maps. To use the new map files that you just transferred to Mobile PC you will need to enable them in Mobile PC and disable the internal detail maps. 1. On the main screen click "TOOLS" then "Manage My Data" then "Map Sets". 2. Click the MapSource" button at the bottom then click the checkbox to clear (disable) City Navigator North America NT2009 and click the checkbox to enable the mapset you just added. (If you included map segments from multiple map products when you were selecting stuff in MapSource you will see each of the different map products listed seperately and you can check and uncheck the ones you want to be able to view.) That's it! Pretty simple stuff, eh? ...ken... Last edited by Ken in Regina; July 8th, 2008 at 06:47 PM. |

Ken, this is an excellent guide. Thanks very much for taking the time to put it together for all of us.

I have the latest version of MapSource but it doesn't find or detect Mobile PC (full version)...
As a matter of it only dentifies "movable" disks : G H I... and I don't have any movable disk... Both MapSource and Mobile PC are running and I have followed the procedure... MapSource is in D:/Garmin and Mobile PC in D:/Program Files/Garmin/GarminMobilePC... and both programs are in French. Any solution? |

I'm not sure why Mapsource is not finding Mobile PC. My trial period for Mobile PC has expired and I won't receive my copy of the full version for probably a week or so, so I can't do any checking right now.
If Mapsource is finding removable disks you must have drives mapped that it is seeing through the device manager. Do you have a memory card reader on your computer? If you poke around in the device manager you might find out what those drive letters are assigned to, if you care. They should not be affecting why Mapsource doesn't see Mobile PC. ...ken... |

Ken,
If your warning about having to reinstall Mobile PC was due to our conversation, I can say that, although Mobile PC complained about an unlicensed product when I transferred CNNA NT 2008, it was just a matter of deleting it in Mobile PC. The existing map CNNA NT 2009 was not affected in any way after the other map was deleted. 2009 is not the same type of product as previous maps as can be shown by it not being transferrable to MapSource. Hi Terry,
Thanks very much for clarifying that. Yes, it was your experience that caused me to put that caution in there. I'll leave it there for now until I get my own full version to mess with. When I'm satisfied that I can reproduce what you just described I'll modify the original post with a description of how to revert. One of the things I want to chase with the software-only version that is coming is the whole issue of using the CNNA NT 2009 that comes with it for other Garmin devices that one may already own. There were no detail maps with the trial version so I was not able to examine it to see how and where the detail maps are stored with Mobile PC. Once I can discover that, I'll have a better idea what is possible. {for_Marvin} Without blowing Garmin's copyrights. {/for_Marvin} ...ken... |

Ken,
As I mentioned in another thread, the layout is completely different, the file names are different and the way it shows in the registry is different. What started me on this was receiving a CNNA NT 2009 update DVD and not being able to use it. The correct wersion for Mobile 10 and Mobile PC is not out yet (August?). Garmin says they will send me a free copy. But in the meantime, if you want to use MapSource with Mobile PC, you are going to need some other maps. That reminds me. I had better give my son a copy of MG Can V4!! Looking at maps to plan routes in Mobile PC is too much work for a novice. Terry |

Or even better, I'll give him an old S&T; the one with REAL Canada data. Marvin, what year S&T was identified as Version 11?

Ken,
Armed with an address for my brother in Bassano Alberta, I did some testing with a transferred MG Can v4 map in Mobile PC. 1. I created a route with Mobile PC from Ladysmith to Bassano using the built in map i.e. CNNA NT 2009. Looks ok..could have had some information about the highway change in Kamloops. 2. I disabled CNNA NT and created the same route using MG Can v4 (I assume). Awful!! Routed through Anacortes and got totally lost in Kamloops. It appeared from the line drawing that it could not find the highways and was doing a modified point to point. 3. Created the same route in MapSource using MG Can v4. Looks fine. Again missing some directional information in Hope and Kamloops but acceptable. Makes me wonder if the MG Can v4 is Mobile PC compatible. Terry |

Ken,
A follow up. I disabled CNNA NT 2009 and MG Can v4 in Mobile PC and again created the route. The results were virtually identical to 2 except the lines were now on the highways. This leads me to believe Mobile PC does not use MG Can v4 at all for routing. Can you confirm this? Terry |

Ken,
I just tried MG Can v4 on another computer and it worked fine in Mobile PC. I will have to look further into the setup on the computer that didn't work properly. There is obviously something wrong with it rather than Mobile PC. That's what comes of testing at 2 am. Terry |

When you select maps in Mapsource, at the bottom of the Maps tab there is a checkbox to include routing data. If that is not checked, routing data will not be included in the compiled mapset and Mobile PC will be forced to route using only the basemap. The basemap has only the grossest routing data in it. Detail comes from the ....{wait for it}....{wait for it}..... {ta-da} .... the detail maps.
At 2am it's easy to neglect that little checkbox at the bottom of the Maps tab. ![]() ...ken... Last edited by Ken in Regina; May 31st, 2008 at 08:46 PM. |
