It's time for an update to this thread but it has become long enough that I think it's time to start a new one.

My good feelings about the general usability of Mobile PC and the beauty of the map viewing haven't changed, but a couple of things have happened that influence my feelings about Mobile PC and might influence purchase decisions by others.

The first is trip planning. Any of us who have the opportunity to use both nroute and Mobile PC seem to be in agreement that planning for non-trivial trips is much easier with Mapsource (and therefore nroute because it uses the same interface) than with Mobile PC. This applies to both the Software-only version and also the version that comes with the Garmin GPS receiver.

The second might be an even bigger issue, but it only applies to the Software-only version of Mobile PC.

You can't add maps.

Here is the word from Garmin Product support.

More specifically, and technically, you can't get unlock codes for the software-only version of Mobile PC. So if you need another region of the world than North America you will have to find Mapsource-compatible maps that do not require unlocking because you will not be able to use any of Garmin's locked map products.

For anyone in Europe or Australia, that means you can use the relevant Metroguide product but not City Navigator. I'm not sure how good a solution that is. Garmin has officially stopped supporting Metroguide Canada. That is, even though Garmin still sells it, they are no longer going to update that product. And it's getting pretty old. I don't know if this applies to the other Metroguide products or not.

Anywhere else in the world is out of luck as far as using a Garmin map product with Mobile PC Software-only version.

The simplest solution for anyone who wants to use Mobile PC is to avoid the Software-only version. The map unlocking issues go away when you have a genuine Garmin GPS receiver connected to Mobile PC with a serial number that you can get map unlock codes for.

The update response is easy to confuse. It does not mean you cannot buy additional maps for other regions. It means that there are no newer versions of the map you already have.

For example, City Navigator North America NT2009 is available. My iQue 3600 does not use NT maps, only the older ones. A non-NT version of City Navigator North America 2009 has not been released. So when I check for updates for my Garmin iQue I get the same message as you got.

The message is literally true.

But I can still buy other maps for other regions for my iQue. For instance, I can buy City Navigator Europe or Australia for my iQue if I wish and I can get unlock codes for them and they will unlock in Mapsource and load on the iQue just fine.

If I understand the registration process correctly for Mobile PC with Garmin GPS receiver, you can buy any maps you wish to use on Mobile PC and get an unlock code for the GPS20x. They will unlock in Mapsource and load to Mobile PC.

La réponse de mise à jour est facile à confondre. Il ne signifie pas que vous ne peut pas acheter de cartes supplémentaires pour les autres régions. Il signifie qu'il n'y a pas de plus nouvelles versions que la carte que vous déjà avez.

Par exemple, City Navigator North America NT2009 est disponible. Mon iQue 3600 n'utilisent pas les cartes de NT, seulement la plus vieille une. Peut-être que je comprend mal la procédure ??

If you already have City Navigator Europe installed in Mapsource and you have used the first unlock code you must buy another unlock code.

In the past Garmin would provide a second unlock code for a second Garmin GPS device at no charge. The policy has changed. They only provide one unlock code. You must purchase additional unlock codes.

Si vous avez déjà City Navigator Europe a installé dans Mapsource et vous avez utilisé le premièrement code pour ouvrir vous devez acheter un autre code pour ouvrir.

The best way for you is to buy Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe NT v9 DVD or others from a provider and install it on your PC with Gamin Mobil PC and GPS20x as I did following the message of Ken up there…

TQ and I see no other option but contact a local Garmin Retailer for it.

I wasn't aware that I have no Mapsource installed, I just did try with the February version but thats not helping out... either.
