Laptop GPS World

I tried it on a backup PC running the software only version of Mobile PC. It worked fine and shows the 5.00.20 update. I note the added option in Display but have not tested the USB functionality yet.

Terry, thanks very much for the good news. In fact, now it is just a matter of incorrect file name. I just downloaded the file from the link in the very first post of this thread (....50010.exe), but when the file was executed, I could see that version ...20 was being installed. When the installation completed, I went to "About", just to double check, and yes, the version is now 5.00.20. I went to Settings > Display, and now I see the new option "Override System Power Settings.......". I'll play with this new version of Garmin Mobile PC tommorow, when I'm on the road.

Yes, it does still say 50010 however, it works and updates either version to 5.00.20.

It still will not find my 20x after the computer is brought out of Sleep mode. to resolve this, I have to physically unplug and plug in the 20x. I can leave Mobile PC running when I do this and it will find the 20x immediately.

As a further test, I left Mobile PC running and put the computer into sleep mode by closing the screen. When I opened the screen, Mobile PC said the GPS was off. I tried enabling it but the program could not find my GPS. I had to go through the same unplug /plug procedure before it woud work.

I want my Bluetooth!!

It may be a good idea to let Garmin know they haven't fixed it yet. I'll try it on my laptop tomorrow, too.

Vista has an power option for USB called selective suspend which allows a properly written driver to suspend power to a USB device during Sleep. I thought maybe Garmin had rewritten the driver to use this feature so I enabled it. Unfortunately that made no difference at all.

I have learned that the problem is because USB power is present in Sleep mode - not lack of power as I thought before. A shut down/ restart cycle will therefore, also resolve the issue as it removes power from the USB ports temporarily.

nRoute does not appear to suffer from this shortcoming. With nRoute running, I closed the tablet screen. I opened it again after a couple of minutes and nRoute was at 'Ready to Navigate' within 2 seconds.

I'll talk to Garmin tomorrow.

I'm now sitting in my GMC 3500 in front of my HP tx2000. I've never changed the relevant default power settings on the laptop, and all seems to be working just fine, as far as I can tell.

I've tested this with the popular USB GPS receiver GlobalSat BU-353. I started Garmin Mobile PC, I opened the GPS screen, and then I closed the lid of the laptop for about three minutes. When I then opened the lid, it took in my estimation less than 5 seconds for the GPS signal strength bars to start moving again.

I also tried to click Start > ShutDown > Sleep, and this worked fine, too. When the computer woke up from sleep, it again took about 5 seconds or less for GPS to continue to work.

I observed on the BU-353 the red LED blinking, so the USB GPS receiver is powered even when the laptop sleeps.

I never noticed if there was any issue before I upgraded to Garmin Mobile PC version 5.00.20, because my laptop is always on during the day.

Unfortunately, the only USB GPS I have is the 20x so I can't compare it. Since you and I are using the same laptop, I will use that information when calling Garmin. If this is just a 20x issue, I'll really be annoyed.

So you don't feel alone Terry,
I never use sleep mode but, I just tried it with my 20x and same results. Unplug replug before it is found again from sleep mode.

Personally, I never use sleep mode.. think its more harm than good and always has been.. just shut the top or turn off a monitor..

Ofcourse that has nothing to do with what Garmin's problem seems to be. Im still using the old update .10g till .20 is used more.

Also, being new I may have jumped to quickly buying the 20x version. I do love it, but am I understanding right... this is the only GPS that will work with my version? if it breaks they want 70 bucks for a replacement. If I would have read better, I would have bought software only I do believe.

But once again. I love my GMPC and 20x at this moment!!

Thank you for the vote of confidence. However, until you upgrade to 5.00.20 we cannot say if the problem I see applies to more than me.

I just got home after about 12 hours of driving with Garmin Mobile PC version 5.00.20. I haven't experienced any problem with this newest version. Just for the record, beside the "sleep" test with the non-Garmin USB GPS receiver, I also tested the same with a Bluetooth receiver. It worked identically well.

It will be interesting to find out if another user of Garmin GPS20x still experiences problem waking up with GPS features enabled in the new version 5.00.20. Perhaps Justaguyin_nc will take the plunge in a few days.

If the issue is related to Garmin's own product, perhaps Garmin may be more motivated to look into it.
