Just went to the Garmin Website and noticed a new update. Please download.

Thanks for the info, slkeranen. When I first read your post earlier this morning, I was at a gas station getting fuel before a 5 hour trip. I couldn't resist the temptation to download and install the update. My better judgement was telling me it was risky to perform software update 5 minutes before getting on the highway...

I should have listened to myself... After the update Garmin Mobile PC starts, but it doesn't show map at all. I only see white space where map is supposed to be.

Luckily I have other GPS navigation software programs on my laptop. I used Microsoft Streets and Trips for the trip. I will try to play with this Garmin Mobile PC issue later tonight. If I don't correct it, I will phone Garmin technical support tomorrow.

Anyone else has any good/bad upgrade story to share?

I'll try it on the spare PC. I don't mind losing the license on that one. Any other, I'm not touching it. Maybe when I get a copy for the tablet, I will try it with that.

Here's more of my story: This morning, when I discovered that the update caused some issue, I went to Control Panel to see if there was a way to remove the upgrade. There I saw two items named Garmin Mobile PC. One was about 40MB in size (if memory serves), and the other was over 1GB large. I assumed that the 40MB one must have been the program itself, and the larger one was likely old version + maps. I removed the 40MB one. That didn't correct the issue.

Now, several hours later, I decided to phone Garmin. While on the phone dialing the number, I though it would be a good idea to install the update file again before I speak to the tech support. I quickly downloaded the upgrade, and as Joe, the tech support person, answers the phone, I'm just starting Garmin Mobile PC for the first time after the installation completed again. I start to describe the issue, but I don't even finish the sentence, because the map miraculously appears, and everything is suddenly OK!. .

In Garmin Mobile PC I went to Settings => About, and interestingly I see I'm running version 5.00.10, not 5.00.20.

I went to perform the update one more time, but it turns out that the update file name is GarminMobilePC_50010.exe.

Now I wish I checked what version I had when it didn't function. Was it 5.00.20 at that time?

Has anyone else updated? What version number do you see in Settings => About?

I keep getting version 5.00.10 at the download link.
I thought it was a typo, installed it anyway, it installed as version 5.00.10 and is now unresponsive when any kind of map is browsed.

Settings => About = 5.00.10

I just spoke with another tech support person regarding the version number of the posted update file. He suspects the version 5.00.20 was posted, but shortly after it was replaced by the previous version because of a possible bug. A new 5.00.20 will be posted shortly. He gave an estimated time frame of: "anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days".

Ben24502, I suggest you install 5.00.10 again (like I did). It will hopefully correct itself (like it did in my case).

The changes for v.20 aren't exactly earth shattering. The only one I could see of interest was different USB handling on return from sleep mode. That might resolve a problem I saw earlier with the 20x and UMPC.

I apologize for all the problems. I was so busy today. I also installed first thing this morning and after could not open GMPC to see the maps. Lesson learned. I hope they correct this soon. I tried reinstalling the update again but no luck. Looks like I will have to reinstall GMPC from the start and then try the update.

Ahhh.. the get the latest update syndrome!!

From being an OLD time gamer I have learned.. as you all now have...
any patch released for a program.. wait a week.. to make sure the patch is not more trouble than the program itself... than install it if you hear/read no troubles from it..

The new feature that is supposed to allow users to override the system power settings may be of interest to some users. If I understand it correctly, it likely prevents screen saver from starting, and PC going to sleep, when Garmin Mobile PC is running (not minimized).

Not at all. I'm glad you've brought the new version to our attention. I'm sure the issue will be corrected shortly.

Absolutely, yes, that's the safe way to do it. It wasn't critical for me, as I had other GPS software available on my laptop, and also I had my PDA phone with iGuidance installed on it, as additional back up. If it were something more critical, I wouldn't take it so lightly.

I did download new update as well,after installations my GMPS is not respond to any maps,it hung and I have to force to close GMPS.Also I did uninstall and re-install new update,but achive the same result.I end up to uninstall update and GMPS as well and reinstall GMPS,no updates at this time.Now my GMPS working perfectly.Please wait a week or two before install this new update.

To day is july 6 and update for GMPC still ver.10.More than week and still old version

I contacted Garmin about this today. They said to download and install it and check Settings - About. I did that for my Mobile PC /20x combo.

Sure enough, it now says 5.00.20

Terry, can you confirm that the file you downloaded was named GarminMobilePC_50010.exe but when installed it shows up as 5.00.20?

When I click the download link on Garmin's site the file it is offering is named GarminMobilePC_50010.exe. The file size is a little bit smaller than the original 5.00.10 update so it might be a different file. I won't waste time installing it if it's still the old update.
