In recent years I've noticed an increasing number of forum postings, blogs, and even newspaper articles about people using their GPS as evidence to fight speeding tickets issued by the police.
There have been some unsuccessful cases, even cases were the defendant attempted to manipulate the evidence in his favor and the prosecution found out about it by simply locating his postings on the Internet. That youngster was held in contempt of Court for fabricating the GPS presentation and not telling the truth in Court. Read his "on-line apology". But there have been success stories, too. Some cases created a legal precedent, which could result in more people challenging the police evidence. In Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald reports about a case, in which Michael, 25, overturned a speeding conviction and fine by downloading the information from his car's GPS unit to show that he was traveling at or below the speed limit and not at 85 kmh in a 60 kmh zone as alleged by two police officers, who admitted in court they had incorrectly used a hand-held radar unit. In Florida, a driver was able to reduce a 72 MPH ticket to 68MPH with his GPS evidence. He has a dash-cam and DVR that records his windshield view whenever his vehicle is in motion. Using a video overlay box, he imprints the GPS heading and speed on the recorded video. View the video clip he used in court as his evidence.
