I am still very puzzled by the title of this thread. I just can't make the connection to a garbage truck.

These are an American version of trucks that are used, for example, as support vehicles, ambulances and recovery/rescue vehicles in hostile locations. They are used as support vehicles in off-road races like the famous Paris-Dakar rally and various Baja California off-road races.

They are the only type of large support vehicles that are capable of surviving the rigours of these hostile off-road environments. Indeed, they are so capable that in the Paris-Dakar rally they even have their own class in the race itself.

These vehicles have been purpose-designed for their intended uses. The only relationship with garbage trucks that I can see is that they all have wheels. Marvin, can you help me here?

You may very well be correct, and the picture may not be showing an old garbage truck converted to a camper, but rather a brand new truck designed to be a camper. Who knows , I only know I wouldn't be able to afford either.

Ah hah! That link to the Snopes article is perfect. It's nice to see that Snopes.com and I agree .. ain't no connection with garbage trucks at all. (I haven't seen any of the spam messages it refers to.)

And you're absolutely right, I couldn't afford either one, either. And if I had the money, I can sure think of other ways to (pardon the pun) "waste" it.

If that is a little rich for you blood, you can always go with an Earthroamer XV-LT.

Well-equipped at just under a quarter-mil.
