I'm looking for a USB GPS device plus software for around $70 or less. If something that costs around $100 is much better than anything in my range, I'd consider getting that too. Which software is generally the best, has the friendliest interface, has the most info about restaurants etc. that are on the way? Which gps locator is the most sensitive? Can I pair any GPS locator and any software? What combo should I go for?
Thanks! David |

I won't get into a discussion of what is best because that's the wrong question. The right, and only useful, question is: "What's best for me?" so we would need to know what features are most important to you before any useful answers can be tossed out. If someone answers a general question like yours with a specific recommendation you can be sure that you are getting the answer of what is best for them, not you. ....Sorry, that sounds rude and it's not intended to be. Just an encouragement to share what matters most to you in laptop software. Things like whether you intend to use it lots for onroad navigation, mostly for trip planning, lots of both, etc. Some have interfaces that work really well for trip planning but not so hot for realtime navigation. Others work great for navigation but not as well for planning. And so it goes....
The difference between under $70 versus up to $100 will likely be the difference between getting the latest map data versus getting last year's products unless you catch a deal on the latest version of whatever you decide on. ...ken... Last edited by Ken in Regina; August 24th, 2008 at 07:00 PM. |

Thanks for the response, Ken. I'm interested in onroad navigation, much less in trip planning. I'd basically like to have it as a utility for my laptop in case I ever find myself in an unfamiliar place and want to know exactly where I am, what's around, etc. I don't mind getting last year's version in terms of the accuracy of the street data, I just want the easiest, least buggy product to use that willl serve me well in those unexpected types of situations.

I use both MS Streets & Trips 2006 and Delorme Street Atlas 2009. I think S&T is easier to learn and use but SA has more features. I had S&T 2008 but it has problems and I returned it, maybe 2009 will be better. Which is best? As Ken says "The right, and only useful, question is: "What's best for me?" "

Very true! There is no bad product. All software programs I've tried, I could happily use on a daily bases, if I had to. It is just a matter of getting used to something, and learning how to use it. Some programs may come with better or worse map data, but for the most part I think I could live with any of them.
