Default Deluo USB GPS unit disconnecting

I am having problems keeping my Deluo USB GPS connected. I have reinstalled the toolkit and drivers, and it will connect usually, but then it is very dicey as to how long it will remain connected. After I loose the connection, if I try to unplug the GPS and plug it back in, I get a USB Device Not Recognized message. Eventually, it will reconnect, but there doesn't seem to be a real pattern to this.

I have tried both connecting directly to Delorme as well as using Franson GPS Gate (this is what I would prefer to use since I want to use the GPS data in two applications at once).

Any suggestions or troubleshooting tips? Thanks!

Hi drifter,

Welcome to Laptop GPS World.

Is it an issue with the USB connection or GPS satellite connection?

Marvin,
It's the USB connectivity that's the issue.

Taking GPS Gate as an example, the unit will be working fine then suddenly it will no longer be visible to the application (toolkit will say waiting for GPS to connect). Then, when I try unplugging the GPS and plugging it back in, XP will give the "Unable to identify USB device" message. It's almost as if the USB converter is still holding the old connection or something and won't re-establish a new connection. Is there an internal switch or something possibly? If I wait a while (That's a very scientific way of saying it varies) and plug it back in, XP can identify it and I can re-connect the applications to the GPS.

drifter, perhaps there could be some conflict with other (USB?) hardware. Try to unplug all other USB devices from your laptop, and then test the USB GPS receiver again. Also, if possible, test the Deluo USB GPS on another computer, if possible. If it still doesn't work, then I suspect a bad luck is to blame - the unit may be faulty (ask for an exchange).

Marvin,
Thanks. There aren't any other USB devices hooked up, only a PCMCIA air card for internet connection. I called the mfg, and they are shipping me a new unit. Hopefully that's the problem! Thanks again for your help.

Scott

Scott, let us know if the replacement unit works fine, or not. By the way, which Deluo USB GPS model is it?

It's the Deluo Universal GPS with a USB connector. It shipped this morning, so hopefully I'll have it by the first of next week. Thanks again.

Just a quick update. The new GPS arrived, hooked up and is working perfectly. I guess the first one was defective in some way (perhaps the usb converter?) Anyway, hats off to Deluo for handling the problem.

drifter, that's great news! I'm glad the USB GPS receiver works for you now. How do you like is so far? Have you had a chance to take it for a test drive?

yep, we've been all over the midwest the past couple of weeks. MO, KS, NE, OK and into IA a bit. I'm using GPS Gate to split the GPS data to a couple of applications and it's operated flawlessly (as compared to the aircard, which is the next battle) Thanks for a great site and the support you provide.
