HELP! GPS reciever won't work with iGuidance!

Hi, my name's Sara, I just got the Garmin GPS20x receiver as a gift but don't like the software it came with, so I wanted to use iGuidance. I cant get the receiver to work with iGuidance. It just keeps saying looking for signal and never does anything. What should I do? Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using Windows XP, download the free Garmin Spanner from here:

Otherwise Franson GPS Gate or GPS Gate Express will fix that for you.

Plug in your 20x. Start GPS Gate and let it find the 20x (Garmin USB). It will tell you which COM ports it is putting out a NMEA signal to. Set iGuidance to one of those COM ports.

re: HELP! GPS reciever won't work with iGuidance!

If you had already installed GPS Gate before plugging in the 20x, you will see a little red icon in the lower right of your screen in the notification bar. Right click on it and choose Settings. Click on the Setup Wizard button and make sure at least the first box is checked (Search for all Garmin USB Devices). GPS Gate will look for a GPS and should find your 20x. Click Next. The next box can be left as it is. Click Next. You will get a list of COM ports that GPS Gate will output NMEA to. Make a note and select Finish. If setup was good you will see an orange (GPS but no satellites) or green (GPS locked on satellites) icon.

Start iGuidance and select one of the COM ports that was listed. That is under Tools-GPS Options-COM Port for v4 and Menu-Settings-GPS COM Port for 2009.

re: HELP! GPS reciever won't work with iGuidance!

If she has iGuidance 2009, she doesn't need to select a COM port. As soon as GPSGate has found the 20x and the icon in the task tray turns dark green, she can run iGuidance and it will probably start navigation immediately without any intervention. She can tell if she clicks on the little satellite icon just below the menu bar. When the satellite display comes up it should have the signal strength bars happening and a location will display already or shortly after opening.

I couldn't find any way to manually force iGuidance to select a specific COM port. Under the TOOLS menu there is a selection for GPS setup. The only entry it has is "Auto Scan" on my installation (UMPC interface). Is there another menu selection somewhere for manual port selection?

Ken,
Look under Menu (the blue button in the lower left) - Settings - GPS COM Port as I suggested.

Oops, I constantly forget about there being a whole other world down there under that other button. I love the display of iGuidance but I hate the interface. I suspect it would be easier if I used it more than once every 6 months .. ya think?
