Default Driver for GPS-500 for XP

I want to use Pharos GPS-500 with Garmin MobilePC but can't find the driver for GPS-500. Went to Prolific and downloaded PL2303-Driver_XP2K_v204102.exe but it does not recognize the GPS-500. I did have an older version of the Prolific driver, which had *.inf and *.sys files, and it worked but my HD crashed and my drivers along with it. If I could get *.inf and *.sys files from PL2303-Driver_XP2K_v204102.exe maybe it would work. But I do not know how.

I didn't even have to copy it from the DVD. I just let XP search the internet (or whatever it does) when I plugged in the device. It took a minute or so, found the driver and installed it. I used the same approach with Vista too.Did you try that approach?

Or you can download it from here:

Make sure you remove the Prolific drivers if you aren't using them. they don't work with that unit and can cause other issues.

That's exactly the one that didn't work. I also let it search but it found nothing.

Welcome to the forums, Djordje. I'm not sure what to suggest, so I copied the above suggestion by Larry... Try again...

What do you mean by 'didn't work'? Did Windows say it could not find drivers for the device or are you having trouble using it? What does Windows say right now when you plug the GPS in?

Could not find drivers, including looking at windows update. I do not know how to extract *.inf and *sys files from Prolific PL2303-Driver_XP2K_v204102.exe file, maybe if there was a way to do that I could just point to wherever these files are and install the driver. I cannot believe I am the only one having this problem.

I really think you are looking in the wrong direction. I do not believe this unit uses the Prolific PL2303 drivers.

I checked the 2008 DVD and it lists 3 ser2plms files.
