Hi Jason99kr,
to Laptop GPS World.1. Yes, I see no reason why it shouldn't. It looks like a nice unit, too. I haven't yet heard about it, but the specifications are impressive. 2. Keeps, in it's memory, data of where you have been. 3. The first one is a USB GPS receiver, and the second is the same unit plus a data logger. If you need Streets and Trips for GPS navigation, you will not need a data logger. Recently we've looked at a similar USB GPS stick by Navation: Review: u-Blox 5 USB GPS Stick - New GPS 'Locator' for Microsoft Streets and Trips

Hi Jason,
If you have a data logger and GPS receiver (or the two combined in a single device, you can do things like dump the location data into a program like Google Earth and see a trace of where you were. These are called "tracks" and are useful for a variety of things. I'm not sure of all the commercial uses but some include being able to see the route that a truck travelled as it went about its business, for instance. Noncommercial uses are mostly for sharing or for planning. As an example, in preparation for a trip with our mountain bikes out to southern British Columbia this fall, a friend and I were able to locate track files of some hiking/biking trails in the areas we wanted to ride. These were just files with location data that hikers and bikers had logged and put on the internet to share with people like me who had never been there. By downloading those track files and displaying them on Google Earth maps (with the satellite images displayed) we were able to see what the trails were like when overlaid on pictures of the real terrain. I was also able to load them into my handheld portable navigation device (Garmin eTrex Legend HCx) that I carry on my bike so that when we were in the area we could easily find the start of the trail and make sure we didn't get off track at various forks and junctions. While I was on the trip, we took a couple of excursions in places we didn't have tracks for, so I set my eTrex to keep a track log. We now have that for trip planning for the next time we are in the area (which will certainly be enough in the future that we will not otherwise remember the details!). The reason Marvin said you don't need a data logger if you are going to use Streets&Trips (or some other program like it that has navigation functions built in) is that Streets&Trips can keep a track log of the GPS data. You just make the connection with the GPS receiver and tell Streets&Trips to keep track of where you've been. I hope that helps. ...ken... |

I picked up this thread when searching google for a review on the Canmore GT-730F(L). I just ordered one.
My daughter is 17yrs old and I'm starting to worry about who she is hanging with. I would like to track her travels. This unit has specs including "(WAAS, A-GPS, 1,000,000 Waypoints, 54 channels)". Where can I mount this device in the car? I understand A-GPS can pick up information via cell phone towers........does that mean the GT-730 can be placed anywhere in the car or does it need direct sight with the sky? Thanks, Brian |

To ensure a easy lock to satellites and good information in difficult areas, a clear sky view is the best. There is no relation between this device and AGPS; it just stores the track. You would have to download the track points physically from the device to a suitable program to see where the vehicle has been. If you are expecting real-time tracking, look elsewhere.
Of course, your daughter could just turn the device off. Terry |

Hi Brian, welcome to Laptop GPS World. Yes, this unit does indeed require GPS signal to function. It doesn't use cell phone towers signals in any way. The letter A in A-GPS (Assisted GPS) means that the unit is capable of downloading information (over the Internet) which will assist it to start within about 15 seconds rather than the typical 45 seconds, when started first thing in the morning.
