And my other 1/2 (both retired) and I are going to be doing some serious camping, traveling this spring, etc: I don't own a GPS yet but do own a Mac laptop which is going with on trips as a source to get mail etc. My question is and I'm sure been asked a dozen or more times, is
Is there such a GPS geared towards the camping and traveling. Most seem to be able to find rest stops, gas etc. Maybe specialized software would be the answer.. anyone have thoughts on this subject??? any help would be appreciated... Ned C: |

Hi Ned C,
Welcome to Laptop GPS World. For that purpose many people use either Microsoft Streets and Trips or DeLorme Street Atlas. Both are excellent trip planning software programs. However, they are Windows applications, so you would have to run them on your Mac the way you run other Windows programs. I don't own a Mac, so I cannot help in this department, but others on the forum do, so don't hesitate to ask. Both of the above mentioned programs cost only about $40, and they can be purchased for a bit more with a USB GPS receiver. Alternatively, you could for another about $40 buy a very good USB GPS receiver which would work well with the two (or other) programs.

My wife and I have been full timing for the last 4 years. We use Streets and Trips for both route planning and GPS real time driving directions. Depending on what kind of places you are going to want to "camp" in you may wish to check out the "Discovery Owners" web site for some resources that may be of help. Do check out the Map Overlay Files area as there is a tremendous amount helpful information there.
