PDA Software on Laptop
Hi Everyone
New to using GPS on an laptop (well a Car PC in fact) so if this question has been asked before then I'm sorry, I did search before hand.
What I would like to know is - is there a way to use PDA GPS software on a Laptop? I will be using Road Runner front end so would like something that will interface with it. I already have Tom Tom Navigator on my PDA with maps of the UK so would like to use them if possible. If it's not can you more experienced Guys make some suggestions.
Thanks in advance

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
Hi Locutus-Mouse,
Welcome to Laptop GPS World.
Yes, some people actually do run PDA GPS navigation programs on their PCs. I've heard of people running TomTom, Destinator, etc. The first step will be to download (free) PocketPC emulator from Microsoft website.

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
Thanks for getting back to me. I have tried several emulators from the windows site all with out success. As a Newbie to GPS on a PC I hope that being a Newbie is the reason I'm getting it wrong! Is there any other software that I will need to get Tom Tom Navigator to work. My OS is windows XP Pro with no service packs.
Thanks

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
Is the problem opening TomTom in the emulator, or is the problem getting TomTom work with your GPS receiver?

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have installed Windows Emulator 1 & the Emulator Images. I remembered that I need to install ActiveSync too (Doh! my bad) and the Tom Tom software started to install, however it was wanting to install to the PDA (not connected). I have tried to copy all the file from the CD ROM & and also tried coping them from thr PDA. All I am getting when I try to run Tom Tom is that it's not a "Win32 application" from that I am assuming that it is not running via the emulator. When I open the Emulator Manager the only thig listed is "other". Hope this makes sence to you as I'm lost!

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
I take your new signature line as a suggestion this forum lacks a decent selection of smileys . I will have to look around for some new ones.

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
The signature line I use is the same on all forums that I am a member of. I also use the same ID. As I am a new memeber of this forum I have just updated my profile. The smiley that I use is from http://planetsmilies.net/ . I'm by no means saying that your forum lacks decent smileys. What I will say is that on most other forum sites the bbcode for the link works and the smiley is shown not just a http link.

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
I must have disabled some setting when I was originally setting up the forum software (but I cannot find the setting now). I think the idea was to prevent pictures in signatures and I didn't want avatars, either. I've seen forums with inappropriate images in signatures and avatars. Some people may be browsing these pages in their office, and I don't want them to get into trouble .
I just installed a few more smileys, though.

Re: PDA Software on Laptop
Getting back on to the thread. I have tried to follow the instructions three times now from the link http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/faq-...-emulator.html without success. The problem is they say that I should find file this and file that and I don't I have searched my PDA several times for currentmap.dat and I can not find it at all and i also seam unable to get the emulator to run too. Back to the drawing board for the SatNav
