It would be interesting if Flannigan could let someone else who has a say "virgin" computer try his Streets and trips. If he did this and it installs and operates correctly Flannigan would have a pretty good idea that it might be worth the trouble to spend an hour or two cleaning S&T out.
My fear is that my copy of S&T 2008 might have a flaw like Flannigans that will show up at an inopertune time. |

I have spent many hours cleaning out S&T. I think I could say I may have spent at least a half a day, or more doing that. I went to Microsoft and followed many of their suggestions and suggestions from the many other forums that I thought would help.
I'm not trying to say I have tried everything or that I know enough to do a thorough cleaning, but I have a pretty good knowledge. I'm almost sure this happened when I downloaded the updates from Microsoft the first week of December. I am keeping the disc in hopes of seeing the "fix" Hunter Green talks about on page 7 / #99 permalink /. I look for that fix almost everyday. I understand your concern as I see more and more people posting this problem on various forums. Regards, Mike Flannigan |

I opened the regedit and found automap. I did not delete it and go any further as I was concerned that I would be deleting Streets & Trips 2007 which I do have installed.
The "auto map" listing did not have an extension showing whether it was 2008or 2007. Would you recommend I uninstall 2007 in ADD Remove programs and then try the regedit ??? I know I can reinstall 2007 if the exercise doesn't let me install 2008 correctly. Thanks ! Mike Flannigan |

Remove both, clean every instance of the 2008 and 2007 out of the registry. There are mainly two keys you need to check. HKey_CURRENT_USER HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE reinstall 2008 and check the registry to see if it's the same as before. BTW: 13.0 is for 2006, 14.0 for 2007 and 15.0 for 2008 Last edited by toyfountain; March 20th, 2008 at 11:20 PM. |

Thanks a lot for the lesson. I am leaving town in the next two days for a couple of weeks so I can't try it until I get back.
I'll do that then and let you know what happens. As I said, I'm pretty sure this happened because of the Windows updates the first week of December, 2007 ??, but I'm willing to try anything as I'm learning a lot from people like you that may help me in the future. Thanks again, Mike Flannigan |

If I had access to the faulty system I have an idea I would like to test, It's kind of hard to explain, but here's a summary.
Do you have access to another computer with "normal registry" of S&T 2008 on it? Like a desktop at home? If so there might be a way to export a copy of the correct key (15.0 of the Automap key) values, copying it and importing it back into the defective installation of S&T2008, set the product ID to all zeros, reboot, start S&T and copy the product id for the laptop and then copying the correct ID to the faulty registry. Only a theory, but maybe.... it could work. |

I do have access to my other Dell laptop that has a successful install of 2008 It was installed the same day Nov 1, 2007 as I installed to this new HP 9000t laptop, Vista Ultimate, 2g, 160g 1.86h, 17" which has S&T 2007 reinstalled and working well.
That theory begs a couple of questions. 1. Since I'm not familiar with this, but think I could perform it, are there any caveats that I would have to worry about. At the very least I should set a restore point before doing any of this ???? 2. I probably should uninstall 2007 on this HP laptop ?? 3. Perform the suggestion that S NIMO S wrote about and you clarified. ?? 4. Then reinstall 2008 on this HP, then perform the theory you just put forth copying the correct automap key from the Dell install files?? 5. The last part of your theory has me a little puzzled ("set the product ID to all zeros, reboot, start S&T and copy the product id for the laptop and then copying the correct ID to the faulty registry.") Lastly, you're flattering the hell out of this old man to assume I'm capable of this, but I'm willing to learn. Is that what would have to be done ?? Regards, Mike Flannigan |

I have spent quite a bit of time studying the suggestion you made and I'm going to pass on it, because of my ignorance regarding the registry. I'm afraid I might make things worse. If I had a person of your knowledge that I could go back on I might try it. I'm going to stick with "If it aint broke, don't fix it". I'm going to stay with 2007, probably for a long time as I doubt I will buy 2009 even though I have upgraded each year for the last ten or so.
Thanks a lot for the time and effort you put into this, maybe someone else will pick up on it. Regards, Mike Flannigan |

I understand your decision. My theory is not risk free. This I wanted you to understand completely before you decided to try it or not.
In the meantime you could use the data folder of S&T 2008 to update the map data folder in S&T 2007. Your S&T 2008 purchase would not be a total loss and maybe MS will come up with a patch later for this problem. |

Hey, JIVEY,
Welcome to Laptop GPS World. That sounds promising! It may mean Microsoft may have a fix for this issue. Anyone wishing to spend the time on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support? If you do, let the rest of us know...

Thanks for letting me know about this. I keep looking on other forums including Microsoft and haven't seen anything yet.
I'll let you know if I see anything. Mike Flannigan |
